Stranger Things star Maya Hawke improvised a very important scene in the show's fifth season, as the actress contributed to one scene that had a major plot hole. Revealed in One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, the actress helped the Duffer Brothers and producer Shawn Levy work on a scene that focused on her character Robin's romantic arc with Amybeth McNulty's Vickie.

During the scene where Robin, along with Max, Lucas, and Vickie, was hiding in the laundry room from the Demodogs, Hawke pointed out that the scene didn't quite capture her relationship with Vickie. She then told Levy,

"I have a question. It hasn't been talked about very much in any of the scenes that we've all been in together — no one knows that we're dating, including Caleb."

She then added that she would like to be closer to Vickie, as she quipped,

"And I would like to play this scene in a whisper — I would like to do this."

Levy then acknowledged the improvisation, telling her that it was good. It became an important scene in the final season, seeing as Robin and Vickie's relationship was pretty central to the plot.

Robin and Vickie’s relationship arc in Stranger Things is one of the most important parts of both their character arcs. By the fall of 1986, Robin Buckley is a senior and fully in her band kid era, spending most of her time in the marching band and trying to move on from her previous crush on Tammy Thompson. That is when Vickie Dunne quietly enters her orbit. Vickie plays clarinet, has an easy laugh, and immediately scrambles Robin’s brain. Robin is interested but also terrified. She has no idea if Vickie is queer and is deeply afraid of becoming the town’s next gossip headline if she gets it wrong.

With encouragement from Steve Harrington, Robin and Vickie start getting closer. Shared jokes, standing together during band practice, and all the subtle moments that define their relationship early on. But things take a hit when Robin sees Vickie with her boyfriend, Dan, confirming her worst fears that she might have imagined everything. But even that does not fully shut the door. Later on, Vickie admits her relationship fell apart and that she tends to spiral when she talks. Robin recognizes herself in that instant, and soon enough, their relationship makes way for something more than platonic.

Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.
