When a show becomes one of Netflix’s biggest thrillers, the pressure to stick the landing only gets heavier and for The Night Agent, that responsibility rests on the shoulders of creator Shawn Ryan, who says he is already thinking far beyond the current season. The creator is opening up on his long-term plans for the thriller show, and from what he has said, we may be getting more seasons than we think.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Ryan compared The Night Agent to his FX show The Shield as he explained,
I think you have to have a plan. You also have to be willing to change your plan if a better idea comes along. I do have some experience finishing shows. I did The Shield, which went seven seasons, and I think a lot of people were pleased with how that ended and how that wrapped up. To me, the key is that you always have to be true to what you’ve written before, that you can’t create something new and ignore big things that you did before.
He then added how ultimately it all depends on the character of Peter Sutherland and how he evolves as he said,
So, we’re thinking a lot about how Peter is different every season. What is he learning along the way? I think there is real character progression with him. We definitely talk about where this is ultimately going and what’s to become of Peter.
More details about The Night Agent
Created by Shawn Ryan and based on Matthew Quirk’s novel, The Night Agent spirals into a full blown political fever dream. Gabriel Basso plays Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent assigned to monitor that dormant emergency line.
Across three seasons, the political stakes escalate from a domestic bombing cover up to international chemical weapons plots and presidential corruption. Season 2 expands the action globally, while Season 3 explores the consequences of power, loyalty, and manipulation inside the Oval Office.
The show’s popularity was immediate. Within four days of its debut, Season 1 logged more than 168 million hours viewed, making it one of Netflix’s most watched new series. It was renewed for Season 2 within a week and later for Season 3 ahead of its second season premiere.
With a legacy like that, it's certain that the show has quite the future ahead of it and more seasons. As of now, all three seasons are available to stream on Netflix, with talks of a fourth season hanging around.
