Tom Cruise has backed Paramount's promise to release 30 movies per year following its proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, calling it an opportunity to make an "abundance" of movies. However, his comments sparked mixed reactions online, with one user commenting:

“My problematic fave can only be so problematic.”

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, Cruise spoke about the planned Paramount-Warner Bros merger. During the interview, he said he was confident Paramount CEO David Ellison would keep his pledge to produce 30 movies annually from the merged studios. Tom Cruise said:

"I think it’s awesome. You know, here’s the thing: They’re going to deliver 30 movies. It’s a community to me. It’s not an industry. The people in these studios are not just people in the studios, they’re my family."

He continued:

"I know we’re going to get those 30 movies. I want us all to come together as a community to make help those 30 movies. It’s not just going to be Paramount doing it. Everyone’s going to need all the help of every artist to be able to do it."

Cruise stated that if the movies perform well, the 30-film target may be raised to 40. He stated that increased production would provide more opportunities for writers, directors, producers, and other artists to grow their careers.

Tom Cruise seemed confident that Ellison would follow through on the promise, claiming that the proposed slate would help the entire Hollywood community rather than just Paramount. He said:

"[If] we do well with those, those 30 movies are going to turn into 40 movies. It’s not good enough that I just get to make this movie for me. I see so many talented people that I want them to have that opportunity, to make the films that they want and be able to … these artists, all these greats, they got to cut their teeth and learn in the same way that you get to act and you’re learning."

The Top Gun: Maverick actor mentioned directors like Alejandro González Iñárritu, Steven Spielberg, and Christopher Nolan, as well as himself, as examples of artists who had the opportunity to advance their field. Cruise stated that younger filmmakers should have the same opportunities to "cut their teeth and learn":

"You take it, and the next one, and the next one. Every single one of them, the Iñárritus, the Spielbergs, the Nolans, me, all the opportunities that I’ve had, I want that for every writer, every director, every producer, every artist. And the only way you do it is we have to create an abundance. It’s production begets production."

His comments come as the proposed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. faces continued opposition. Ellison has assured theater owners that the combined business will release at least 30 theatrical movies each year, with a 45-day theatrical window.

Cruise is closely associated with Paramount. The studio has released all eight Mission: Impossible films, as well as Top Gun and a number of other projects. Skydance Media, led by Ellison, co-produced Top Gun: Maverick and backed Mission: Impossible.

The actor also has a first-look production deal with Warner Bros., giving him professional ties to both sides of the proposed merger.

Netizens react as Tom Cruise shows confidence in Paramount’s promise of releasing 30 films a year

Tom Cruise's comments on Paramount's ambitious plans sparked mixed reactions online, with some users wondering if fans would support such a massive theatrical slate. A user wrote:

"Tom c'mon my problematic fave can only be so problematic."

A user questioned the possibility of a large number of theatrical releases in the streaming era:

"Are there enough ticket buyers to support such a movie slate in this era of streaming??"

Another joked about Cruise's faith in the merger and its plan, writing:

"Held at gunpoint ahh statement."

One netizen questioned Cruise's comments about respecting fans while criticizing the current Mission: Impossible films:

"If Tom Cruise cares so much about his audience, why did he make up the last two Mission movies on the fly? Didn't even start with a script. Just a bunch of stunts he wanted to do and the movies sucked as a result. Doesn't sound like someone who respects his art or his audience."

One user questioned Cruise's role as an important asset for Paramount, stating that he may not be living up to reality:

"No sh*t Tom Cruise carries the torch for Paramount he’s the only person keeping it alive at the moment but he’s not living in reality."

One user joked about having the promised JL sequels by Zack Snyder:

"And 2 of them need to be the justice league sequels."

One questioned the possibility of releasing 30 films per year, saying:

"Hard to believe. 30 movies a year is logistically, financially, and creatively impossible."

One user attached a link to Cruise's dialogue from Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning:

"Tom Cruise: “I need you to trust me, one last time.”"

One user joked about Tom Cruise's passion for making movies:

"Find you somebody that loves you as much as Tom Cruise loves making movies."

Another questioned Paramount's ability to maintain quality while expanding its annual output:

"My concen about them wanting to put that many movies out a year is the quality of those movies. When you rush movies to theaters to prove a point you end up trading quality and that will backfire for them paramount is already leveraging everything on this deal if it fails."

Finally, one user took a more humorous approach to Cruise’s attempt to reassure audiences, joking:

"Getting gaslit by Tom Cruise is almost as good as getting an autograph! I’ll take it."

Tom Cruise's support of Paramount's 30-film strategy comes as the $111 billion merger faces legal challenges and growing criticism in Hollywood. With the merger still under scrutiny, it remains to be seen whether Paramount and Warner Bros. can deliver on their ambitious plans without sacrificing quality.
