Amazon's adaptation of Mass Effect as a TV show is changing routes as the new head of Amazon TV wants rewrites to make it appeal to non-gamers. According to The Ankle, Peter Friedlander took over as Head of Global TV at Amazon MGM Studios back in October and he's been going through all the scripts for in-development shows. When he got to Mass Effect, which is described as a "pricey genre drama," he supposedly requested that they rewrite it to be "more appealing to non-gamers." The downside here is that the gaming community is now worried as nobody wants their favorite franchise watered down for people who were'nt fans of it.

The show's supposed to be set after the original trilogy which means there might be more context for people who never played the games. Mass Effect's universe is pretty self-contained in terms of storytelling, so making it accessible to casual sci-fi fans isn't inherently a bad thing. An example is how Amazon's Fallout adaptation turned out, as it became a massive hit and brought in a ton of people who'd never touched the games.

We will certainly know more in due time, and how extreme these changes will actually be. For now, fans are still hoping for more updates, half a decade after the rights were first secured.

The writers' room for the show was greenlit to start at the top of 2025, which means the show's scripts are possibly being worked on now. Doug Jung is the showrunner, who co-wrote Star Trek Beyond and worked on The Cloverfield Paradox. He also just wrapped Chief of War for Apple TV where he wrote all eight episodes, which means the show is in good hands. Daniel Casey is writing and executive producing, prior to this he wrote Fast & Furious 9 and a miniseries called Drone back in 2012.

Last year in November, Mass Effect boss Mike Gamble talked about the show and said,

"We’ve been partnering closely with Amazon on [the series], and we’re really excited with what the talented team over there is coming up with. The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game. The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story — because after all … that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?"

Filming is supposedly starting in late 2026, which means if everything goes smoothly we might see the show in late 2027 or more realistically in 2028.
