Lilly Singh is returning to her YouTube roots after nearly five years away from making skit videos, but her comeback has already sparked debate over how much the platform has changed since her rise to fame. A user commented:

“She’s about to find out just how much the game has changed.”

On Thursday, October 15, the comedian and former late-night host debuted her first new skit in nearly five years, titled My First Day Back at YouTube. The video marks Singh's return to the format that helped her create a social media following of over 33 million in the 2010s.

Why is Lilly Singh returning to YouTube?

In an interview with USA Today, Lilly Singh revealed that her experience working in Hollywood had left her feeling creatively constricted, driving her to return to a platform where she could develop ideas on her own. She said that she wanted to prioritize enjoyment in her work:

"I think being in that system for a while has made me feel restricted creatively."

She went on to explain:

"I feel like we don't prioritize joy enough, and this is something that brings me so much joy. I love dressing up as characters. I love situational comedy. I love just bringing my brain babies to life."

Singh subsequently stated that she believed the production constraints made success impossible, noting in a 2025 interview that she had to film 96 episodes on a short budget in three months.

During her earlier YouTube career, Singh was recognized for observational comedic sketches about common scenarios, such as What Clubbing Is Actually Like, Back to School Shopping with Cheap Parents, and When Your BF Starts Acting Different Around His Friends.

Her internet success led to opportunities in mainstream entertainment, such as her NBC late-night show, A Little Late With Lilly Singh, which debuted in 2019. The show aired for two seasons but did poorly with ratings.

What kind of videos will Lilly Singh be making in her YouTube comeback?

Lilly Singh has promised that her comeback will include familiar characters as well as the situational humor that drew her fans in the beginning. However, she wishes to investigate subjects that are relevant to her current situation. She told USA Today in an interview:

"It's not back-to-school videos anymore. It might not be about my first crush anymore. But it's going to be about like the stuff I'm going through, and me and my friends are going through today."

She continued, admitting that the world continues to supply plenty of material for humor, describing it as a "dumpster fire of issues":

"The world, for better or for worse, unfortunately, but fortunately for content creators, continues to kind of be a dumpster fire of issues."

Lilly Singh also intends to address women's issues and create videos for seasonal occasions such as Halloween and Christmas:

"So yes, you'll definitely get women's issues … [But also] you'll definitely get thematic videos around holidays, Halloween, Christmas, etc."

Instead of aiming to replicate her previous success, she wants her new sketches to reflect her current experiences and perspectives:

"I'm in a really privileged position. When I used to make videos consistently, I was trying to make a name for myself and pay bills. Having moved to L.A., I was trying to build an audience."
