If you have not yet moved on from The Boys, now is the time to, because Prime Video has now dropped the first look at Vought Rising, the prequel series that takes the whole franchise back to 1950s New York and asks one simple, terrifying question: what was Vought before it became the monster we know?
Judging by the trailer, the answer is that it was already pretty monstrous and less than a week after the original show ended, we are already in new territory now.
The trailer opens on a version of Ben who is still idealistic enough to mean it when he says he wants to be a hero. Jensen Ackles is back in the role, but this is a completely different person from the bitter, cocaine-fuelled wreck fans know. Young Ben wants to fight for his country, believes in something, still has that light in his eyes. He stands there and says, "I want to fight for the flag. I want to be... a hero" and if you've seen what happens to him over the next several decades, that line lands like a gut punch. That's the whole dramatic irony of this show in a single sentence.

On the other hand, we have Clara. Aya Cash returns as Stormfront, but here she goes by her real name and operates with all the warmth and charm of someone who absolutely knows exactly what she's doing. The trailer ends on a meeting between the two of them, where Clara tells Ben there is "a bright future all we need to do is take it."
As for the visuals and aesthetics, everything is here. Early Vought propaganda, lab imagery, and other Supes are all visible throughout, which means the show could go wider than just Ben and Clara's dynamic.
The cast list is long and star studded. Alongwith Ackles and Cash, we hav Elizabeth Posey as Private Angel, Will Hochman as Torpedo, and Mason Dye as Bombsight, joined by KiKi Layne, Brian J. Smith, and Ricky Staffieri.
The Boys is done but Vought Rising on the other hand, is apparently just getting started and based on everything in this trailer, that's exactly what fan wanted. A prequel that genuinely has something to say about where the evil came from, rather than just cashing in on brand recognition, is rarer than it should be.
More details about Vought Rising are awaited for now.
