It isn't the easiest job in the world to recreate the magic of a critically acclaimed Emmy nominated show for a second season, and that is exactly what The Night Manager creator David Farr is opening up on as he talks about the creative challenges that came with the second season.
In an interview with Variety, the creator revealed how he didn't want to create a second season just for the sake of it, and waited to find a worthy reason for a second story. Speaking to the outlet he stated,
The reason we didn’t do it for ages was that I was very anxious about just suddenly plowing into something without a worthy reason to do so. I wanted to find a way to extend this story in a satisfying way that I felt justified it being a trilogy. As is often the way with writing, it helped that I finally had one very clear idea, which was the whole Teddy story. The notion that Roper, as a young man, could have been a gunrunner in Colombia felt right to me."
He then continue to dive deeper into Teddy and Jonathon's dynamic on the show, and how exploring their dynamic was one of the best parts of working on the second season as he added,
Suddenly this whole thing, this very le Carré theme, just fell into place. As you can tell, I’m a fan, and it started to feel really truthful to that world rather than just trying to force a spinoff or an opportunistic second season
What happens on The Night Manager Season 2?
The second season of The Night Manager starts off with Richard Roper living in Columbia, where he has spent six years shaping his power. With a simple goal of engineering a regime change and wiping out his debts, he takes the help of exiled leader Jose Cabrera and Teddy Cavendish and Lord Sandy Langbourne, he slowly rebuilds everything he has lost.
On the other hand, Jonathon is spying from within, anticipating Roper's plans to repeat the British backed could under future amnesty protections.
As the conspiracy deepens, MI6’s role becomes undeniable, with an electromagnetic pulse bomb at the centre of the plot. Pine learns Roper forced Burr to fake his death, while Teddy turns violent. The finale sees betrayal fail, allies die, and Roper escape justice, returning to England untouched.
The Night Manager Season 1 and 2 are available to stream on Prime Video.
