In his latest memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Earl Spencer made a number of accusations against presenter Piers Morgan, sparking a new feud.In the book, Diana's younger brother describes how, after years of anger with media intrusion surrounding the late Princess, he personally contacted newspaper editors in 1997 and asked them not to attend her funeral.According to Spencer, when Morgan, who was then associated with the Daily Mirror, was informed he was no longer invited, he reacted angrily. Another aspect of Spencer's story has been strongly contested by Morgan, who also stated that he was going to file a lawsuit over what he called "demonstrable lies."What did Earl Spencer write about Piers Morgan?Despite his resentment of the media, Spencer's memoir claims that newspaper editors were invited to Diana's funeral. He claims he was "flabbergasted" to learn that editors had been invited and informed the Queen's senior private secretary, Robert Fellowes, that they should not attend as, in Spencer's view, "they killed her."Spencer claims that once Fellowes informed him that the invites had already been sent out, he personally called the editors to request that they not attend.According to him, the majority of editors agreed to stay away after sounding confused or embarrassed. But Morgan reportedly responded in a different way. He wrote:"The only one who sounded surly, as opposed to merely confused or embarrassed, was Piers Morgan of the Mirror, who snarled with annoyance before he hung up."According to the memoir, Spencer thought Morgan might have experienced "guilt" because the Sunday Mirror published pictures of Diana in a leotard at a gym in 1993.Spencer goes on to talk about Diana's own interactions with journalists, stating that she once advised him to "count yourself lucky" since she had to have lunch with Morgan on a day when Spencer was going through a tough time. Why is Piers Morgan threatening to sue Earl Spencer?Piers Morgan strongly refuted Spencer's version of events, including the claim that Morgan was in charge of publishing Diana's photos. The broadcaster called the charges "bull****" and stated in an interview with Piers Morgan Uncensored that they would be simple to disprove:"Well, this is all pretty extraordinary stuff, isn't it? And very damning, particularly about me. I come across in the most despicable manner imaginable. There's just one problem. It's all bull**** and very, very easy bull**** for me to prove it."Piers Morgan noted that the Sunday Mirror published the images in November 1993, but he didn't start working for the Daily Mirror until 1995.Morgan claimed he was "about as far removed from responsibility for the Mirror scoop as I could possibly have been" at the time the photos were released because he was a showbiz columnist for The Sun.Piers Morgan denied claiming to have been a 'journalistic angel' and maintained that Spencer was '100% wrong' about this particular allegation. He later stated that he would be telling attorneys to get in touch with Penguin. In addition to calling for a donation to be made to the King's Trust due to what he characterized as the harm caused by the assertion, Morgan stated that he wanted the disputed line deleted from the memoir. Whether formal legal actions have been initiated is not clear. He said:"Because I would like the complete lie that you've published about me, and those photographs [of Diana], to be removed from your book. And I would like a donation to be made to the King's Trust for the damage that you've caused with your lie, after all. To quote somebody, you can't dish it out without getting it in return, right?"What else does Earl Spencer claim in Swan Song? The feud with Piers Morgan comes as Spencer's memoir has already garnered a lot of attention due to its claims about the Royal Family and Diana's final years.Spencer's description of a phone conversation with the then-Prince Charles after Diana's death in 1997 is one of the most well-known allegations. During a dispute about Diana's funeral, Spencer says Charles sounded "giddily elated" and subsequently told him, "we'll forget her soon enough."Buckingham Palace responded to such allegations in an unusually blunt manner, stating that the King was aware that bereavement may "cloud reason, affect judgment, and color memory" even many years later. In a BBC interview, Spencer defended his story, claiming that he was "telling the truth" and that those were "exactly the words" Charles used.Spencer's memoir also includes accounts of Diana's interactions with the media, his worries about Harry after his mother passed away, and assertions regarding the Royal Family's reactions to Diana-related events. The feud has created even more controversy surrounding the release of Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, with Morgan now considering legal action over his portrayal in the book.Stay tuned to Soap Central for more information.
