Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley's relationship ended in 2022, following a whirlwind romance in which the NFL quarterback and actress became engaged within months of going public. The two were first linked in 2020, and their relationship went public in early 2021. Rodgers has now shared his account of what led to the end of their relationship.

During a September 10 appearance on the Not Just Football With Cam Heyward podcast, Rodgers shared his account of what led to the end of the relationship.

Rodgers announced his engagement at the NFL Honors in February 2021, and Woodley subsequently confirmed it during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Their engagement lasted almost a year before it was announced in February 2022 that they had broken up. However, the former couple appeared to briefly reconnect later. They were spotted together again, and Rodgers even paid tribute to Woodley, thanking her for her support and showing what unconditional love meant to him. They eventually separated permanently in 2022.

What did Aaron Rodgers say about Shailene Woodley?

During a September 10 appearance on teammate Cam Heyward's Not Just Football podcast, Rodgers highlighted his former relationships with Woodley and Danica Patrick, as well as defending himself against public perception as a bad partner.

The Steelers quarterback stated that he had dated "two women" whose stories of their relationships contributed to people seeing him as a "monster" of a partner. He argued that the accounts surrounding those relationships did not accurately reflect his version of events.

Rodgers also claimed Woodley might have felt rushed to make a decision when he proposed, but he emphasized that she could have said no. According to Rodgers, Woodley removed her engagement ring in March. He added that the couple tried multiple times to reconcile but could not make their relationship work. Rodgers claimed:

“Her story is that I ruined her life and gave her a crazy depression because I left her. But the actuality is, she told me that then she took off the ring by March. So I proposed in December, [she] took out the ring by March. And we had a couple of times where we tried to, you know, get reunited, and nothing ever happened.”

Aaron Rodgers denied the narrative that he ended the relationship and caused Woodley considerable emotional pain. He disputed the version of events he said had been attributed to Woodley, claiming that she had told him she no longer wanted to be with him after they attempted to reconcile. He also claimed that there was no relationship left to end in 2022. He said:

“There wasn’t even a relationship in ‘22 to break off. She literally told me, ‘I don’t want to be with you,’ after we tried to have some sort of reconciliation in 2021.”

Woodley has previously spoken about experiencing extreme emotional distress around the same time, but she has not publicly addressed Aaron Rodgers' latest account of their breakup or what he addressed on the podcast.

In a 2024 interview with Outside magazine, she detailed an unexplained "really awful, traumatic thing" that occurred in early 2022, stating that she felt she had lost her sense of self, happiness, and joy. Woodley said she came to understand depression and anxiety during that period and described experiencing "complete soul detachment":

“I felt like I lost my soul, my self, my happiness, my joy. I really understood depression and anxiety and, like, complete soul detachment.”

She also stated that she remained in what she called a "toxic situation" because she was empathizing with another person. While she did not identify Aaron Rodgers or disclose detailed specifics about the situation, she stated that her relationship with him was beautiful but not right:

“I haven’t shared much about my relationship with Aaron because it always makes me cry. It was not right. But it was beautiful.”

What did Rodgers say about his other ex, Danica Patrick?

Aaron Rodgers also spoke about his relationship with former NASCAR racer Danica Patrick, whom he dated from 2018 to 2020. He rejected Patrick's previous characterization of their relationship as emotionally abusive and denied her accusation that he "leaves a trail of blood."

Aaron Rodgers claimed Patrick was suffering from depression after retiring from racing and characterized her as unpleasant to be around at the time, while saying he had attempted to be a supportive partner. He claimed their relationship had deteriorated to the point of "zero intimacy" and that things altered even more when he opted not to buy another house with her.

Patrick had previously given a different account of their relationship, claiming in a 2025 interview that she ignored warning signs and described the relationship as emotionally abusive. Aaron Rodgers claimed that both Patrick and Woodley offered inaccurate versions of their relationships.

Who is Aaron Rodgers' wife, Brittani?

While addressing his previous relationships, Aaron Rodgers opened up about his current wife, Brittani. Rodgers revealed that he first met Brittani in 2017, while she lived in Austin, Texas. She eventually returned to Europe, and Rodgers said he regretted not asking her to stay or proposing to her at the time.

He said that meeting Brittani had a long-term impact on him, and that he became emotionally unavailable for most of the next seven or eight years because he knew she was the person he ultimately wanted to be with.

Aaron Rodgers went on to date Patrick and Woodley during that time, but says he eventually reunited with Brittani. Following their reunion, the couple married privately in 2025. Rodgers has kept most details about his wife private.

He previously revealed that she does not use social media and has avoided placing their relationship in the public eye. Aaron Rodgers also credited Brittani for helping him repair his relationship with his estranged family, stating that her unconditional love changed his perspective on his other relationships.
