Prime Video's The Chosen is finally making it's highly anticipated return this year and after months of speculation, the streamer has finally announced a premiere date for the beloved show. This is following Amazon MGM Studios' 2025 deal with 5&2 Studios, with the release date being set to November 15, 2026.
Dallas Jenkins, chairman and chief creative officer of 5&2 Studios and creator and executive producer of The Chosen opened up about the season and stated,
“Everyone knows the basics of this part of the story, but not everyone knows the ‘why’ of the crucifixion and the extraordinary events of these 24 hours. We realized this not only deserved a season of television but a standalone full-length theatrical event as well. We wrote and filmed all of it with this in mind.”
The first three episodes drop simultaneously on November 15 followed by weekly releases through the finale on December 6. But here's the exciting part: the season finale will also get a standalone theatrical release in spring 2027, continuing The Chosen's impressive box office momentum. This means fans will get to experience it in a completely enthralling way.
Everything we know about The Chosen Season 6
The Chosen is heading into its most devastating chapter yet as the sixth season will focus entirely on Jesus' crucifixion, and from what we know, it won't be watered down for comfort as the show's creator has teased some brutal scenes.
"I don't think the crucifixion was family-friendly," Dallas Jenkins has said to PEOPLE as he compared the process to the approach to Mel Gibson's 2004 film The Passion of the Christ. Because the show has spent five seasons building emotional connections to these characters, Jenkins believes he doesn't need graphic violence to land the impact. "We'll still do some of that, but it won't be quite as explicit as Mel's," he explained.
An official synopsis of the season reads,
The hour has come. Before the sun sets, Jesus will be dead. Season 6 captures the historic events of Jesus’ final day through the lives of those who love Him—and those who condemn Him. Pharisees call it justice. Romans call it peace. Followers call it murder. But in the face of loneliness and death, Jesus stands resolute in a plan that has always led to one place: the cross.
The whole cast is coming back, which is a big part of why the show has stayed so consistent and compelling. Jonathan Roumie returns as Jesus alongside Shahar Isaac, Elizabeth Tabish, Paras Patel, and everyone else fans have come to love over five seasons.
