Nicolas Cage, who recently starred in Prime Video's Spider-Noir, was recently a part of a panel at New York Comic Con. He talked about the challenges of being an actor in a constantly changing industry and about the upcoming projects he's going to star in.
A part of the conversation included Nicolas Cage confirming that he was asked to sign an AI waiver for Spider-Noir, which he declined. Cage also teased that he might star in True Detective Season 5.
Nicolas Cage opens up about the Spider-Noir AI issue
Nicolas Cage most recently starred in Prime Video's Spider-Noir, which was cancelled by Amazon despite the show getting nominated for 11 Emmys and winning 5 of them. Spider-Noir was also a success with the fans. Thus, it was quite shocking that Amazon chose to cancel a show that did so well.
Nicolas Cage has now revealed something that suggests why the show might have been cancelled. As Variety reports, at New York Comic Con, Nicolas Cage said:
“Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI. I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to let him use AI on ‘Spider Noir.’ I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.”
Thus, Nicolas Cage is strongly against the use of AI in entertainment media. While the actor did not explicitly state his refusal to sign the AI waiver as the reason behind Amazon cancelling Spider-Noir, it seems probable. He did ask the audience to connect the dots, which is suggestive in nature.
It seems like Amazon cancelled the show because they couldn't use AI in it as long as Cage was a part of it, and removing him from the show would strip it of its value. Regardless of Cage's words, it has not yet been proven that the AI issue is why Spider-Noir got cancelled after 1 season.
While Cage will not be returning as Ben Reilly/The Spider, he will return as the animated Peter Parker/Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027). Other films Cage is set to star in include Madden, Fortitude, Best Pancakes in the County, Lords of War, Perish, and The Prince.
At New York Comic Con, Nicolas Cage also teased that he might be starring in a season of True Detective. Season 5 of the show is the next in line, currently in production, and scheduled to be released on HBO in 2027. Thus, it looks like he is most likely talking about True Detective Season 5.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, as Cage talked about how he wants to keep working but not do too many films back-to-back, he said:
“So I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right? Like Jonathan Turteltaub, he gets a microphone in his hand and he goes to Philadelphia and says, ‘We’re doing National Treasure 3, and Nic’s coming. I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t sign up for that'. You got to get these microphones out of these directors’ hands."
HBO has not yet confirmed or denied if Cage is part of the show. It is only the actor who has teased it so far.
Spider-Noir is streaming on Prime Video.
