Late-night host Seth Meyers reportedly fired back at Donald Trump after the president blamed California for soaring gas costs. Trump posted on his Truth Social yesterday that the shutdown of refineries in California was responsible for the rise in gas prices. Seth Meyers pushed back on Trump blaming California for gas prices:

"Really? Are you sure it has nothing to do with you bombing Iran for six months?"

Meyers mocked him and said that blaming California for expensive gas was similar to destroying people's favourite restaurant and then getting upset with the delivery driver who brought the food.

CBS reported that Trump's government officials met at Camp David on October 2, 2026, to review the war with Iran. There, they examined the growing clashes between the Houthi militia supported by Iran and the Yemeni government army backed by Saudi Arabia.

According to AAA Fuel Prices, the current gas price in California is $6.39 per gallon. One month ago, the BBC reported that the war between the United States and Iran in the Gulf led to the increase of crude oil prices above $105 a barrel, which means $2.50 per gallon.

In Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host opened up about Donald Trump's claim that the rising gas prices in California happened due to the shutdown of the refineries. Meyers counter-argued against the president's claim and asked whether the situation might actually be connected to the fact that he had ordered bombings in Iran for six months.

The Hill mentioned that on October 5, 2026, Trump claimed that the rising price of gas was being caused by problems at oil refineries. He explained that the increase was not the result of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran began. On Truth Social, the president wrote,

"What’s driving up Gasoline is no longer the Strait of Hormuz, because Record Numbers of Barrels are coming out now on an almost daily basis, but the word, ‘Refineries,’ where Russia’s are being blown up by Ukraine, and where ours are being closed up, in Blue States, like California, by the Democrats."

The chief petroleum analyst at Gulf Oil, Tom Kloza, explained to The Hill that Trump's claim about the Russia-Ukraine war causing high prices was only partly correct.

Seth Meyers counter-argued Donald Trump's claim on rising gas prices in California because he clearly knew that the actual reason was something else. The conflict between America and Iran in the Gulf had grown more intense, which led to the sharp rise in crude oil and gas prices.

The war had also led to the Strait of Hormuz being effectively closed, which had blocked oil and gas supplies from the Gulf from reaching global markets. Meanwhile, long-term borrowing costs in both the United States and the United Kingdom have surged to their highest levels in decades.

However, Trump claimed that the rise in gasoline prices was no longer linked to the Strait of Hormuz, since record numbers of barrels were being shipped almost daily. The president argued that the real issue was with refineries and added that Russia's facilities were being attacked by Ukraine. Before the November midterm election, he claimed that the refineries in U.S. states such as California were being shut down by Democratic officials.
