One Hundred Years of Solitude: How Season 2 finale marks the downfall of Macondo and Buendía family

Netflix's hit drama, One Hundred Years of Solitude, premiered in December 2024. Following its popularity and success, Season/Part 2 dropped on August 5, 2026, with the series finale releasing on August 26. The feature-length finale episode wraps up with the downfall of the Buendía family and Macondo.

Based on Gabriel García Marquez's 1967 novel, the plot is set in a fictional town of Macondo. It follows cousins José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula, who get married against their parents' wishes and leave their hometown to search for a new place. Their search ends with the founding of Macondo, a utopian town set on the banks of a river. The following generation of the Buendía lineage shapes the town's future as they navigate their lives tormented by absurd wars, a curse that condemns them to 100 years of solitude.

One Hundred Years of Solitude Season 2 features the events following the signing of the Treaty of Neerlandia. However, the peace doesn't last long. The Conservatives, fearing Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s threats, plan an attack. Meanwhile, Fernanda del Carpio from Bogotá marries Aureliano Segundo, giving Ursula her first legitimate heir.

Meanwhile, the railroad opens doors to the banana company that eventually leads to the town's downfall and completes Úrsula Iguarán’s curse that the lineage condemned to 100 years of solitude had no second opportunity on earth.

One Hundred Years of Solitude Season 2 ending explained

Previously, in Season 1, the viewers saw how the Buendía's were left amidst a massive conflict in the mystical town of Macondo. Eventually, multiple illegitimate children showed up at Úrsula's door from Aureliano. As the family got bigger, conflicts started to emerge between Fernanda del Carpi, Aureliano Segundo, and the Colonel.

Aureliano Babilonia, the young man who spent years locked in the room, finally deciphers the Melquíades parchments and discovers the family history. However, revelation turns emotional as he realises that the Buendía's could never escape their tragic fate. Just as Aureliano Babilonia reads the final sentence of the manuscript, the town of Macondo gets destroyed, and a windstorm wipes it off completely.

The finale episode begins with revisiting his relationship with Fernanda del Carpio, who treated him like a slave and would not let him leave the house. Things take a turn with the arrival of Amaranta Úrsula. Eventually, Amaranta Úrsula and Aureliano Babilonia fall in love. However, they did not realise that they were aunt and nephew until the end.

From the first generation, Buendia's family carried a curse that inbreeding in the family would produce a child with a pig's tail. They managed to dodge it for generations until Amaranta Úrsula and Aureliano Babilonia fell in love. Unfortunately, their child is born with a pig's tail, and Ursula dies during childbirth.

How did the Buendía's family line end in One Hundred Years of Solitude Season 2?

In the end, Aureliano finds that his baby is being carried away by ants. Eventually, as he deciphers the parchments which contain the Buendia's family history, he finds out that Amaranta was his aunt, and as he reads the last line, a strong hurricane destroys the town of Macondo.

The narrator summarizes it by revealing first in line is tied to a tree, and the last is being eaten by ants.
