Netflix's action-adventure teen drama, Outer Banks, is apparently getting a prequel. According to Deadline, the prequel is set to explore the origins of Kildare's long-standing social divide, revealing how the rivalry between the Kooks (wealthy residents living in Figure 8) and Pogue (working-class residents living in The Cut ) originally began. The upcoming prequel will be set twenty years before the events of Outer Banks.
Show creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke had previously discussed the idea of the prequel in multiple interviews. Jonas Pate previously mentioned it during an interview with Wilmington's Port City Daily in 2023, revealing the show is in its early stages. In the 2024 interview with the same media outlet, he further said that Kildare (Outer Banks' prequel) will have a new set of young actors and will explore the origins of the class divide. He further revealed that they are planning to film the series in one of the pivotal filming locations.
"We’re looking to film it in Wilmington,”
That being said, Netflix has not yet officially announced the prequel. Turns out, this is one of the projects that the creators' trio have pitched under the Netflix overall deal.
Here's more about it.
Outer Banks' prequel Kildare to explore the origins of social divide

Outer Banks is all set to wrap up with its fifth season. It will premiere on August 20, 2026, on Netflix. With the last season premiering, the show creators can now focus on the prequel. In an interview with Deadline, Josh Pate confirmed,
"We’re working on the script. We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”
Speaking about the premise and the timeline of the prequel, Josh Pate told Deadline that it will explore the origins of the Kook-Pogue divide.
“It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started."
Burke told Deadline that the prequel will feature both some known characters and some new ones. As it is set around two decades before the events of the young adult series, it will explore the characters' parents' generation.
The series has featured Sarah, Wheezie, and Rafe's father, Ward, who actually grew up in The Cut and then eventually made it to the Kook's rank with a mansion in Figure Eight. Apart from them, John B's father, Big John, and JJ's father, Luke; Topper's grandfather, Judge Holden, and mother, Dr. Cynthia Thornton, and also Pope and Kiara's parents have also appeared.
Has Netflix greenlit the Outer Banks prequel?
The streaming platform is yet to confirm the prequel, even though the creators have teased it in an interview with Deadline. Netflix has been skeptical about expanding popular series in recent years. A few exceptions are Bridgerton and Stranger Things. The streamer had previously opted out of the Army of the Dead sequel. In 2026, the streaming platform has cancelled over 13 shows, including The Abandons and Strip Law. Viewers have to wait until Netflix officially confirms the prequel.
