Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 brings two familiar faces back into the fold

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 returned on Starz with a high-stakes premiere that once again separated our beloved couples, Julia and Henry, and Ellen and Brian. While Julia returned to Castle Leathers in 1715, Henry found himself back in 1924, confined in the Inverness Lunatic Asylum.

Henry's situation was tragic in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 premiere. He was losing control of his memories of Julia, William, and baby Claire, until two familiar faces appeared and offered him hope. Eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed these figures were none other than Reverend Reginald Wakefield and his housekeeper, Mrs. Graham, two legacy characters from Outlander.

Claire and her husband, Frank Randall, first met Rev. Wakefield and Mrs. Graham on their second honeymoon to Scotland. The couple not only stayed with them, but Wakefield even helped Frank research his ancestor, Captain Jack Randall.

With younger versions of Rev. Wakefield and Mrs. Graham introduced in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2, they will certainly have a major impact on Henry's story in 1924.

Henry met Rev. Wakefield and Mrs. Graham in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 premiere

The Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 premiere was a harrowing chapter for Henry, who found himself at the receiving end of Dr. Perryman's electric shock therapy in 1924. Since Henry was delusionally mumbling about his time with Julia and the Grants in 1715, Dr. Perryman and the asylum staff naturally took it as an extension of his time in the war. Thinking it to be an extreme case of PTSD, Dr. Perryman decided to give Henry shock therapy to wipe away his memories of war.

This naturally had a tragic effect on Henry in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 premiere. As the lines between past and present times blurred, Henry started to doubt his account of 1715. Just when he questioned whether he might be delusional for real, Rev. Wakefield appeared at the asylum like a ray of hope. The final moments of Episode 1 saw Mrs. Graham visit Henry at the asylum and offer him something he desperately needed. Mrs. Graham said she believed Henry's story of time travel and the Craigh Na Dun stones.

While Henry's situation felt bleak in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 1, Mrs. Graham's belief in his story might prove vital in his reunion with Julia.

Seasoned Outlander fans will remember that Mrs. Graham was not just Rev. Wakefield's housekeeper but a charming lady with deep knowledge of Scottish folklore and local legends. Mrs. Graham also had many supernatural gifts, including tea-leaf reading and palm reading. During one such session in Outlander Season 1, she correctly foresaw that Claire had two men in her heart, alluding to her time-travel adventure. Many fans even speculate that Mrs. Graham knew about Claire's time-traveling abilities or might be a fellow traveler herself.

While the parent series did not expand on Mrs. Graham's character, Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 might provide answers.

Speaking with Decider, creator and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts teased that each legacy character from the original series will have a major impact on the spin-off:

“We don’t want just a drive-by. You don’t just want somebody walking by just to have — because that’s really not the Easter egg you’re looking for. So the fact that both of them [Mrs. Graham and Rev. Wakefield] could affect the story was perfect for us.”

While Roberts was naturally tight-lipped about Mrs. Graham and Rev. Wakefield's role in Season 2, they will certainly help Henry reunite with Julia and expand on the mythology of Outlander.
