Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 6, titled Small Mercies, felt like a twist of the knife for seasoned fans, who saw Jamie's (Sam Heughan) flogging at the hands of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) in Outlander Season 1.

The latest episode of the Outlander prequel introduced the franchise's most hated villain, Black Jack Randall, in the past and gave a tragic new meaning to one of Jamie's darkest moments in the original series. While trying to rescue Dougal (Sam Retford) from his cell in Fort William, the location where Jamie was flogged in Outlander, Brian (Jamie Roy) ran into a 14-year-old Jack Randall (Finley Glasgow) in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 6.

Unaware that this 14-year-old child would grow up to become his son's tormentor, Brian decided to spare the young redcoat's life, giving a new tragic meaning to Jamie's flogging and Brian's own death in the Outlander universe.

Brian's 'small' mercy in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 seals his son's fate

Outlander features many heartbreaking moments. But seasoned fans will attest that Jamie's flogging at Fort William remains the most tragic. Flashbacks to that fateful day are featured in the twelfth episode of the first season. The Redcoats arrested Jamie and brought him to Fort William for standing up to Black Jack Randall and protecting his sister. He was later given one hundred lashes, which resulted in permanent, brutal scars on his back.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 6 not only touched on Jack Randall's early sadistic tendencies, as he tortured Dougal with a piece of coal, but also foreshadowed his future actions with new meaning. After rescuing Dougal, Brian and Murtagh came across the young redcoat. While Dougal wanted to kill Jack Randall for his actions, Brian decided to commit a 'small mercy' and spared his life, saying he was 'just a boy.'

The title of Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 6 is deeply ironic. Brian showed 'small mercy' to a young soldier, completely unaware that this very person would grow up to brutally flog, torture, and assault Jamie at that same location (Fort William) years later, in Outlander.

In Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 'Small Mercies,' Brian not only spared his son's future tormentor but unknowingly signed his own death certificate. Black Jack Randall's torture did not end at a hundred lashes. As a flashback confirmed, Jamie was still recovering from his first set of wounds when Black Jack Randall ordered another one hundred lashes for theft. The second flogging was even more brutal, as it was witnessed by Brian (and Dougal).

Believing Jamie had passed away from the torture, Brian suffered severe shock and fainted on the spot. While he was taken home to Lallybroch under the care of his daughter, Jenny, Brian eventually passed away from an apoplexy (stroke), unaware that Jamie had survived Randall's flogging.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 is continuing to connect the prequel to the larger Outlander universe. Episode 6, 'Small Mercies,' was a devastating entry that gave a new meaning to Jamie's darkest Outlander moment. Brian's decision proves that kindness runs in the family, but his action had a ripple effect. The moment was so devastating that Retford, in an interview with Collider, jokingly apologized to Heughan's Jamie for listening to Brian's advice and sparing Jack Randall.
