Oxygen True Crime: Full timeline of the Happy Face Killer case - events leading to final victim's identification

The Oxygen True Crime network revisits the brutal murders of 8 women committed by a truck driver named Keith Hunter Jesperson, also known as the Happy Face Killer. His first victim was Taunja Bennett, a 23-year-old woman who met him at the B&I Tavern and was later beaten and strangled to death. The crime took place in January 1990 in Portland, Oregon.

Taunja's murder case was twisted by Laverne Pavlinac, who falsely confessed to police that she and her abusive boyfriend John Sosnovske killed her. She fabricated the story to break up with Sosnovske.

The investigators recently confirmed that all eight victims legally connected to Jesperson have now been identified. The victims were Taunja Bennett, Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter, Cynthia Lyn Rose, Laurie Ann Pentland, Suzanne Kjellenberg, Patricia Skiple, Angela May Subrize, and Julie Ann Winningham. Oxygen True Crime: Full timeline of Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter's identification process

Early 1990 to Late 1992

Oxygen True Crime and law enforcement authorities recently revealed that Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter, who had disappeared from Texas in the early 1990s, was the final unidentified victim of the Happy Face Killer.

In the summer of 1992, she was killed by the Happy Face Killer inside his truck near the Indio/Coachella Burns Brothers rest stop in Southern California. After murdering her, he drove his semi-trailer into Riverside County and left her dead body along Highway 95.

On August 30, 1992, a passing motorist found her skeletal remains about seven miles north of the small town of Blythe in southeastern California along Highway 95. The highway runs parallel to the Colorado River, the boundary between Arizona and California.

At that moment, investigators believed that the woman was between 21 and 30 years old, and so they couldn't identify the body. She remained unidentified as Jane Doe for nearly 34 years until modern genetic genealogy finally confirmed her identity.

March 1995

Jesperson was captured this month after murdering his girlfriend, Julie Ann Winningham. After his arrest, he first confessed to a Portland news reporter and later to authorities about several unsolved murders across different states, including Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter's murder.

Jesperson insisted that he did not know her real name and referred to her only as Claudia. The Riverside County District Attorney's Office revealed that he had picked her up at a truck brake-check area along Interstate 15.

January 8, 2010

Jesperson had pleaded guilty to her murder in Riverside County in January 2010, by which time he had already been convicted of killing five people. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in jail.

2024

The Riverside County Regional Cold Case Homicide Team used forensic genetic genealogy to trace Lydia's DNA to biological relatives on her paternal side. However, they were still missing the crucial maternal link needed to confirm her identity fully.

The cold case unit issued a renewed public appeal for information about the woman Jesperson had called Claudia. That appeal eventually brought in a crucial tip, which led detectives to one of Lydia McWhorter’s direct maternal relatives.

August 2026

Oxygen True Crime revealed that investigators obtained a direct DNA cheek swab from Lydia's living sister. On August 27, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office officially announced the confirmed match, and this final confirmation closed the case on the last unidentified victim of the Happy Face Killer.
