Dr. Oz's YouTube channel posted another old Oz True Crime episode: the Brian Dorian one. For those who don't know, Lynwood police officer Dorian was wrongfully arrested, as he was suspected of being the Honeybee Killer, back in October 2010. The Oz True Crime episode revealed that he was arrested mostly because law enforcement was in a hurry to close the case.
The Drew Peterson case was still fresh in people's minds, and it might have played a role in Brian Dorian's wrongful conviction. Thus, this 21-minute episode delved deep into the circumstances around Dorian's arrest and the one surprising piece of evidence that ultimately proved his innocence.
Oz True Crime - the Honeybee Killer episode explained:
The Oz True Crime episode was presided over by Mehmet Oz, Jessica Buttafuoco, and Aphrodite Jones. The basics of this case are thus: The police arrested Brian Dorian in October 2010, as they suspected him of being the infamous Honeybee Killer. The "serial killer" had shot up a construction site in Beecher, Illinois, and even shot up farmland the same day.
Two people survived the farmland shooting, one of them being a young boy who ran into a field. This young boy is the one who identified Dorian from the lineup. The police initially just questioned the Lynwood police officer and let him leave. It wasn't just two days later that he was arrested. Dorian told Oz, Jones, and Buttafuoco that the police wanted him to take a lie detector test, which he agreed to.
But soon, the police made Dorian stand in a lineup instead of a lie-detector test. It is here that the young boy from the farm identified the police officer. But it seems that this did not stick because on October 13, 2010, the Will County State dropped charges against him. At that time, Attorney James W. Glasgow said that he felt terrible for Brian Dorian.
Conversely, Dorian's attorney David Carlson said that while the police officer was relieved, he was still concerned that a killer was out in the open. But two months later, the real killer was revealed.
Gary Amaya was the real Honeybee Killer:
Charges against Dorian were dropped in October 2010, and the real Honeybee Killer was revealed in December of the same year. Gary Amaya, a man whose own father revealed that he was struggling with some issues, tried to rob an Orland Park tanning salon in December 2010. There, he held a woman and a customer at gunpoint.
The woman called 911, which was recorded, and the customer is the one who tackled Amaya, which ended with his death. Later, investigators realized that the bullet in Amaya's gun matched the bullet used in the Honeybee Killer shootings. This call and the subsequent revelation are what proved that Brian Dorian was innocent. It was even played in the Oz True Crime episode.
A year after his acquittal, Brian Dorian sued Will County in October 2011, when he was still working as a police officer in Lynwood PD. Alleging false arrest and malicious prosecution, the lawsuit named Sheriff Paul Kaupas, Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, and an unnamed detective involved in the case.
