Pluribus Season 1 lived up to the marketing hype last year. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, setting up the second season. Since then, viewers have been waiting for any update about the second season. The Emmy nominations were announced this week, and it seems the Vince Gilligan sci-fi series has been nominated for an impressive 18 awards, including the drama series award.

Mere hours after the Emmy announcement, Apple TV executive Matt Cherniss gave some news about the upcoming second season. While he did indirectly confirm that Gilligan hasn't started filming Pluribus Season 2 yet, Cherniss did tease that the upcoming season will be comparatively more ambitious than the first one.

What did Matt Cherniss tease about Pluribus Season 2?

Variety interviewed Matt Cherniss, in which they discussed the Emmy nominations for Apple TV shows like Widow's Bay and Pluribus. The discussion began with how Widow's Bay was nominated for Emmys despite its late arrival. When the Variety reporter asked Cherniss whether the acclaimed horror-comedy show would return for season 2 in the next Emmy cycle, i.e., next year, the executive responded that it would be difficult.

The reporter then asked the same question about Vince Gilligan's Apple TV sci-fi series. In response, Cherniss reiterated what he had told the reporter about the possibility of Widow's Bay Season 2 being released later this year. The executive said:

"I think that’s going to be tough too. Vince is really ambitious with Season 2, and really taking time to make sure that the show lives up to everyone’s expectations. It too is a very complicated show when it comes to executing and shooting, so that would be tough for us to to fit into that next cycle. But we’re starting to see early drafts, and everyone’s moving at a good pace. So excited to see that one come back."

Therefore, it looks like the second season of Pluribus will be even more ambitious than the first season.

Is writing for season 2 complete?

No, the writing for season 2 is not completed. Rhea Seehorn herself confirmed it this Wednesday in a Deadline interview after the show's impressive nominations. When asked about the upcoming second season, Seehorn responded, saying that she hasn't received any scripts from the production team, meaning it will be a while before cameras start rolling on the upcoming season:

“I am at the stage of dying to read scripts. I don’t have anything, but I know they’re so hard at work. I haven’t even dropped by the office for fear of disturbing them. There is every intention to get us started as fast as we can. I know that that’s so important to the whole writing stuff, but it’s also important to them to maintain the level of writing and production that they’ve done in the past and to reward the intelligence of our audience.”

Given that the Apple TV sci-fi series was lauded for its slow-burn but engaging writing, the streaming giant and viewers are expecting something special with the second season.
