Poppy Liu opens up about Hacks finale ending "on a high note"

It cannot be denied that the fans have been looking forward to a heartwarming Hacks finale, and the series did not disappoint. Though initially Deborah’s shocking decision set the stage with a layer of anticipation and heartbreak, things took a complete turn in the end, bringing forth an ending that will remain in the hearts of the viewers.

Through the five seasons of the series, each and every character has slowly etched a place in the hearts of the fans, and among these characters, Poppy Liu’s Kiki also stole the hearts of the viewers with her strong presence. In a recent interview, Poppy Liu opens up about the Hacks finale.

While discussing how the series became a “constant” in her life and the impact of the Hacks finale, Poppy Liu notes that the ending of the show “felt symbolically like an era was ending”. She also considers that this series is the “greatest comedy of the 21st century” and the ending was done “on a high note”.

It cannot be denied that from the beginning of the series to the end, the complications that Deborah navigated through, along with Jean Smart’s impeccable performance, became a crucial part of the fandom.

The struggles to the eventual success that Deborah achieved despite the challenges that she faced due to the gag order placed upon her create a lasting impact. Poppy Liu notes that the goal was always to “create” this exact impact and appreciates the viewers for embracing the storyline.

Hacks finale recap

A crucial aspect of Hacks finale is that it not only tied up the ending for Deborah but also for the other characters. The beginning of the Hacks finale episode showed that Ava is taking on the reins of her television career, while Deborah also opens The Diva. On the other hand, Jimmy and Kayla face a difficulty at their office; however, by the end of the finale, Jimmy finds out about Kayla’s father’s actions and uses it to get the upper hand and take over the company with Kayla.

Though the beginning of the episode sets a happy note, soon things take a turn when Deborah tells Ava about her health condition. She adds that instead of going for chemotherapy, she will be getting legally euthanized. Ava is completely shocked by this information. She urges Deborah to choose treatment, as she cannot imagine her life without her.

However, Deborah is adamant. She chose to go on vacation with Ava only because she thought Ava would also be present with her during her last moments. As the Hacks finale progressed, Ava tried her best to keep it together while spending quality time with Deborah during their vacation. She also tried to give Deborah the details of new treatment options.

However, Deborah refused. At the end of the finale, as Deborah and Ava prepare to board their final train to reach the location where Deborah is about to get legally euthanized, things take a turn. Deborah eventually decides to get treatment, as she wants to keep writing jokes. Ava is extremely happy with Deborah’s decision. The two eventually continue their vacation before Deborah’s treatment starts. The ending of the series resonates with a hopeful note about Deborah’s future.

It is rare to see TV shows being able to tie up all the intertwining storylines in the finale; however, Hacks finale does this in an impeccable manner. Each and every cast member does a remarkable job in depicting the depth of the storyline in the finale episode. From Ava showing how significant Deborah is in her life to Deborah finally realizing that she could choose a different path, the series remains an impactful one.
