Amazon Prime Video's upcoming series God of War has found its war-god Odin in the former Criminal Minds actor Mandy Patinkin. The action-adventure series hails from Sony Pictures Television & Amazon MGM Studios and is based on the 2005 PlayStation video game of the same name.
Mandy Patinkin joins the already confirmed cast members Ryan Hurst (Kratos), Max Parker (Heimdall), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Thor) and Teresa Palmer (Sif).

Mandy Patinkin will play the popular Norse god Odin in Prime Video's God of War
For the uninitiated, God of War is a popular 2005 video game inspired by ancient Norse mythology. The game's narrative follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior and the titular god, as he encounters various mythological pantheons along with his 10-year-old son, Atreus.
The upcoming series will adapt a page from the video game and follow Kratos and Atreus as they undertake a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. According to the official synopsis, the series will explore Kratos and Atreus' relationship as the former teaches his son how to be a better god and the latter teaches his father how to be a better human.
Mandy Patinkin has joined God of War as Odin, one of the strongest and most popular gods in Norse Mythology, who is also considered the poetry-god and is Thor's father.
According to Variety, Patinkin's character description reads as follows:
“Odin, the All-Father, is not physically imposing or particularly god-like: but looks can be deceiving. [He’s] a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unrivaled seeker of knowledge. When it comes to seeking out prophecy, Odin is paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous — he will do anything to try and prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days. He serves as a formidable antagonist to Kratos.”
God of War has already received a two-season order at Prime Video with Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer on the series through his Tall Ship Productions banner. Pre-production on Season 1 is already underway in Vancouver and the live-action adaptation of the Norse Mythology will likely hit our screens soon.
In addition, Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun) is set to direct the first two episodes. Prime Video has yet to set a release date for the series. God of War is co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios & Sony Pictures Television, alongside Tall Ship Productions & PlayStation Productions.

The Tony Award-winning and The Princess Bride actor Mandy Patinkin is best known for playing SSA Jason Gideon, one of the "founding fathers" of the BAU in the initial seasons of the CBS procedural Criminal Minds. He also starred in Showtime's thriller series Homeland, alongside Claire Danes. Mandy Patinkin played Saul Berenson, a veteran CIA intelligence officer and Carrie's mentor in Homeland.
In addition, the God of War's newest cast addition is also known for recurring characters in Hulu's mystery drama Death and Other Details, CBS' legal drama The Good Fight and Showtime's comedy-drama series Dead Like Me.
