Reacher Season 4 premiere recap: A train suicide pulls Jack into a high-stakes political conspiracy

Alan Ritchson's larger-than-life titular hero is back in action in Reacher Season 4 on Prime Video, based on Lee Child's 2009 novel Gone Tomorrow. The three-episode premiere diverges from the traditional, slow-burn "small-town detective" formula of past seasons and drops its hero into a fast-paced thriller, where he is forced to run, chase, and react constantly.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 1 begins with its hero on the move on a Philadelphia subway car, where he notices a woman showing all signs of a su*c*de bomber. However, the woman, a Pentagon clerk named Anna Merrick, revealed that she doesn't have a bomb but a gun. When Reacher claimed to be a cop and tried to save her, Anna shot herself in front of him, after claiming that nobody can save her. This train incident sets a chain reaction that pulls Reacher into a high-stakes political conspiracy, connected to a missing flash drive containing sensitive government documents.

Jack is captured in Reacher Season 4 Episode 1

Jack's brief interaction with Anna brought him face-to-face with Philadelphia cops Tamara Green and Shaun Docherty in Reacher Season 4 Episode 1, who were more interested in stalling him for the DC Feds' arrival than the details surrounding the incident on the train. Jack's hunch was right, and the higher-ups questioned him about whether Anna left him something, which made him curious. Outside the station, Jack was introduced to Anna's brother, Jacob (who revealed that she has a college-age son named Ben), and two goons, who questioned him about a flash drive. Turns out, the goons were sent by a woman named Lila Hoth, who was diagnosed with leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant from her estranged father, who is now a North Carolina congressman named John Sampson.

Reacher learned that Anna helped Lila trace her father, and she planned to blackmail him with documents in the drive. In Reacher Season 4 Episode 1, Lila provided her cell phone number to Reacher in hopes of getting any information about the drive. However, Reacher and Jacob's investigation came to a halt when they were attacked by an assassin. After Reacher rescued Lila from her hotel and was headed to meet Jacob at the DC station, he was ambushed by some men in suits, who took him out with tranquilizers and captured him.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 recap: A meeting with Jack Sampson

Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 wasted no time revealing that Reacher was kidnapped by the CIA, alongside Tamara and Jacob, who became his unofficial partners in locating the flash drive that started this mess. After Reacher managed to free himself and his new friends, the group split into two. While Reacher was headed to meet Jack Sampson, Tamara and Jacob were headed to Anna's house. The duo arrived at a ransacked home and discovered that Anna's son Ben did not show up for his football practice. The trio was finally reunited and headed to Ben's frat house, where a boy named Colin revealed that Ben left with an OnlyFans model the other night.

Thanks to Docherty, the trio managed to track the model's apartment but found that she had already been murdered. The final moments of Episode 2 saw Reacher earning a meeting with Sampson in a private suite after ambushing his speech in front of the press. However, much to his surprise, Sampson was unaware of Anna and denied fathering Lila in Indonesia. While Reacher was initially skeptical, Sampson spat in a glass to prove it, suggesting that Anna's su*c*de was unrelated to him.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 3 recap: Jack learns Lila's 'real' truth

While Reacher was growing suspicious about Lila's story (after meeting with Sampson), he recognized his chief of staff, Nolan Cahill, as the missing witness on the night Anna died. After another action-packed sequence, Reacher was reunited with Lila at a bowling alley and questioned her about her story. That was when Lila confessed that she's a journalist trying to expose the secrets of the US government in Reacher Season 4 Episode 3. Lila revealed that Sampson’s Delta Force unit trained a tyrannical despot named General Putra and his soldiers, who committed war crimes against individuals protesting the growing influence of the military.

After another ambush (where Reacher saved Lila again), he met with Sampson to confirm the details of Lila's new story. While Sampson accepted that he met Putra, he denied aiding or endorsing his war crimes. In the final moments of Reacher Season 4 Episode 3, when the duo confronted Cahill, he apologized to Sampson and threw himself from the roof, suggesting that the conspiracy runs deeper than they had anticipated.
