Rick and Morty creators reveal why they couldn't spare Morty in the Season 9 finale

Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 10 brings forth yet another complex challenge for Morty and Rick to navigate. For the nine seasons, the two of them have faced multiple challenges, which have added to their character growth.

However, despite Morty trying his best to solve these challenges, he creates the path for even more dangers. Showrunner Dan Harmon, in a recent interview with Polygon, reveals the reason Morty could not be spared even in the finale episode of Rick and Morty Season 9.

Just as in the previous episodes of this series, in the finale episode of Season 9, Morty comes across yet another dangerous challenge, but this time there is an emotional tone to it all. It cannot be denied that Morty is surrounded by people whose behavior towards him has impacted him immensely. Hence, after he comes across a Morty at the yard sale who informs him about funeral hopping, he is quickly intrigued.

He does not get appreciation from his own family; hence, getting attention from the family who actually showers him with affection quickly draws him in. However, soon he begins to understand the dark truth that this seemingly nice family hides after Jerry’s abusive behavior comes to light. Morty also finds a completely different version of Rick.

He urges Rick to help him get back home. Morty’s desire leads to Rick leaving his family life to help Morty and, in turn, becoming the very same version that Morty knew all along. In the interview with Polygon, showrunner Dan Harmon reveals that unless Morty is put in these dangerous situations, the show will become “unrecognizable”. From the beginning of the series, each and every challenge that Morty faces becomes a signifying factor of the series.

Rick and Morty Season 9 episode 10 also shows a similar aspect. Co-showrunner Scott Marder also revealed that the complicated dynamic that Morty has with Rick is the “heart of the show”. Even though the two of them fight constantly or are putting each other in life-threatening situations, their dynamic is the propelling factor of the storyline of the series.

At the end of the finale of Season 9, this distinct relationship that Rick and Morty share can be seen. Morty, completely disturbed by the new family he has found who are now showering him with love, decides to ask Rick to help him with returning home, causing Rick to get “corrupted” just as he has always been. Morty’s harmful environment has impacted his relationship with Rick in a “lot of ways,” according to Scott Marder, and in turn Morty also forces Rick to “get what he wants”.

This is a “full circle thing” for Morty, which is delivered remarkably in the season finale. Though the series has been going on for several seasons, Morty remains the same age despite the dangerous challenges that he comes across every episode.

While discussing this aspect of Morty’s character, showrunner Dan Harmon adds that Morty has “organically grown” but the “core of his identity” remains the same. Just as Morty has, Rick has also grown, but he does not “believe that,” and this keeps their characters “real.” Viewers can stream the new episode of the series on DirecTV, Hulu+ Live TV, etc.
