Sally Field addresses WB-Paramount merger in Emmys acceptance speech

Sally Field has spoken out about the Warner Bros.-Paramount merger at the Emmys during her acceptance speech. Field won the Emmy Award for the lead actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures. In the Netflix movie, directed by Olivia Newman, she starred alongside Lewis Pullman, who played Cameron Cassmore, the grandson of Field's character Tova Sullivan.

While this is a big win for Sally Field, it also makes her the oldest actress to win in this category. Jessica Tandy previously held the record after winning for Foxfire in 1987.

Through her acceptance speech, Sally Field also addressed the Warner Bros. and Paramount merger at the Emmys, stating that art, different voices, diversity, and unique storytelling all matter. She further added:

"We can't let those voices be silenced or compromised or merged."

The two-time Oscar winner, Sally Field, recently appeared in Remarkably Bright Creatures, where she played the role of a widow. While working in a small-town aquarium, she forms a bond with the octopus, which becomes an important part of her life to help her deal with loneliness. In the end, the octopus also helps her reconnect with her grandson in the most unexpected way.

However, this is not Field's first Emmy win, as she has been nominated ten times at the Emmy Awards and has already won three awards. The latest win for Remarkably Bright Creatures makes it four Emmys in total in her name.

Sally Field started her acceptance speech by jokingly saying that this wasn't supposed to happen and that she has to be really quick. She further mentioned the author, Shelby Van Pelt, whose novel the movie is based on, giving a brief story of the movie.

Thanking everyone in the Emmys acceptance speech, she said that she has been grateful and proud to be part of the arts community for more than 60 years, adding that art, different voices, diversity, and unique storytelling all matter. While she did not directly mention the merger by name, Field seemingly referred to it while saying that these voices cannot be "silenced or compromised or merged."

Her comment was widely seen as a response to the Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger. The recent deal has raised concerns in Hollywood about more companies coming together and how it will affect creative freedom and the future of the industry.

Last month, Mark Ruffalo also publicly spoke out against the same merger on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the deal could affect many people, including thousands of families who could lose their jobs. He also raised concerns about one family gaining control of major companies like CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros. Ruffalo continued that the deal needs to be looked at carefully before it is allowed to go ahead.
