SNL Season 52, episode 3, was hosted by Shane Gillis and featured Rosalia as the musical guest. Among the several jokes cracked in Gillis' opening monologue was a controversial one in which he used a slur to describe a certain group of women.

The joke had initially mostly been criticised by netizens, but now, Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy has fired back at it in an Instagram post. The Canadian actor and writer criticized the joke and then went on to talk about how jarring it is that this kind of joke is still being made in 2026.

Dan Levy's words about Shane Gillis' SNL joke

SNL Season 52, episode 3, aired on NBC on October 10, 2026. The episode's host was Shane Gillis, and in his opening monologue, he made jokes about the different reasons as to why it is difficult for him to go to the gym now. He joked that the presence of extremely fit gay men at the gym made him feel insecure. But then he made a joke that is being considered to be problematic.

Gillis joked that since he hadn't been to the gym in a long time, he didn't know that women often wear short shorts when they work out at the gym. As seen on the SNL episode, Gillis used a derogatory slur for women who wear short shorts and made an explicit comment about their clothing and bodies.

Gillis then said:

“...Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts? Have you seen the shorts? They’re neon, like, artificial bait-colored?...And don’t look. You’re not allowed to look. For real, don’t look, because they are filming. I’m in the background of like 10 TikToks right now.”

Gillis not only used a slur to describe a certain group of women in his SNL joke, but also went on to describe what clothes those women are wearing in detail. Dan Levy fired back at the joke in a video he posted on his Instagram account. Levy said that if women wear short shorts, it doesn't make them the slur Gillis used, instead it makes the men who use such slurs, misogynists.

He then talked about how he has seen more men working out bare-chested than he has seen women showing off their bodies. Levy also said that the fact that a joke like this was approved and made on live national television has left him speechless.

He highlighted that men should be standing up against people who sexually assault or harass women instead of making jokes about it. Levy added:

"...it’s complacency that has created the environment in which women are sexually assaulted and it’s a ‘conversation’ as opposed to a ‘crime.'”

Levy also said:

“Men need to be defending women more. This is not a women’s issue, this is an everybody issue. Because the more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects. They are not objects... And I’m sorry if this gets me in trouble with the internet, but f*ck.”

Levy has earned support from netizens in the comment section of the post, with many calling out Shane Gillis for the joke and questioning SNL for approving it. SNL has not yet released a statement on the issue, and neither has Shane Gillis.
