By School Spirits Season 3 Episode 3, Split River High has officially gone off the rails. Mr. Martin admitted he caused the 2004 bus crash that killed Quinn. Now Simon has this idea that the only way out of the afterlife is to crawl through a hidden passage inside Mr. Martin’s scar. It’s hard to blame him for grasping at straws. The Episode closes with Simon heading straight into a nightmare: he finds himself deep underground, in a creepy abandoned house that links back to the school, face-to-face with some dark, shadowy figure.

Still, what’s the deal with this scar under Split River High? Why does everything keep circling back to it?

In the series, we have come to know that every ghost in Split River High possesses what is known as a scar, which is basically their personal hell in which they are made to relive their death repeatedly. Imagine it being a haunting, immersive hallucination of their worst moment. These scars are opened by keys, which are the objects every individual died with. As an example, the key to Rhonda is her letter of acceptance to college, and the key to Wally is his game ball.

But the scar that Mr. Martin bears is different. Way different. In Season 2, Mr. Martin and Janet learned that the scars in Split River High are not merely a few spots of trauma, but rather these are indeed linked to one another, creating a kind of nightmarish underground network. Mr. Martin discovered still stranger things: there was a secret passageway under the floor of his scar.

As he explained to the ghosts in School Spirits Season 3 Episode 2, he heard a song he recognized playing in his scar after he died in the fire at the chemistry lab. It was a song that his childhood friend Ralph had been singing, and in pursuing it, he found this secret way.

It was something down there that changed everything for Mr. Martin. He informed them that there are additional spirits at Split River High, but they are not similar to the student ghosts that we had been following. They are quite different things, something darker and more evil. As Mr. Martin first entered the passageway, he came to an old, deserted house. It was then that something caught him by the ankle and dragged him down to the bottom of the water. This experience was so traumatic that he has kept it a secret, yet he believes that this supernatural power is the reason why a lot of people have died within Split River High over the years.

In School Spirits Season 3 Episode 3, Wally attempts to explore the passageway, and he does not inform anyone except Simon. At the end of the tunnel, he discovers the same ruined house, and once he sets foot on a puddle of water, a hand comes out and drags him down. The following moment, he finds himself standing in the Split River High library, and what makes it worse is that a living school employee does get to see him before he collapses. This is huge since the living cannot see the spirits. It is what happened to Mr. Martin some years ago when he entered the passage for the first time.

This finding in School Spirits Season 3 Episode 3 brings the ghosts to a horrifying conclusion, in that there is some supernatural power at work in that deserted house that can lift a veil between the living and the dead. It could turn ghosts visible to the living ones, it can transport spirits through space, and it appears to have some form of control over who is dying at the school. Mr. Martin actually confirmed that it is this entity that is the cause of such a high number of deaths in Split River High.

Simon gets obsessed with the thought that this passage could be the reason why he is in limbo. Simon is not dead like the other ghosts. He is alive but cannot leave the spirit world due to what happened in Season 2. He is sure that as long as he can get to whatever is down there, he should be able to get an answer or even somehow get back to the living world. Although everyone objects, and it is obviously dangerous, he chooses to go for it.

School Spirits Season 3 Episode 3 culminates in a truly disturbing climax. Wally assists Simon in descending into the scar of Mr. Martin. They set up a rope arrangement to allow Wally to help by climbing up, as Simon searches the deserted house down below. Just as Simon is carefully approaching the old building, the rope breaks. His headlamp flickers and dies, throwing him into darkness. And it is then he notices it: a dark face at a distance observing him.
