Sherlock, the British crime drama series, which is a modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, has aired four seasons from 2010 to 2017. The show hasn't been officially cancelled, but it has been on hiatus for almost a decade. In the past, co-creator of the show, Mark Gatiss, had said that more seasons weren't made because Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman did not want to star in the show anymore. But recently, Cumberbatch and Freeman were spotted together at Wimbledon, and co-creator Steven Moffat has also shared an update that hints at the possibility of Sherlock Season 5.Why did Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman not want to return to Sherlock?Since Sherlock is based on the detective stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, both Holmes and Dr. Watson are integral characters of the show. One simply cannot make a new season of the show without these characters. Moreover, fans loved Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively, and recasting the characters for Season 5 simply wouldn't work. View this post on Instagram Instagram PostThat is one of the primary reasons Season 5 of the show has yet to be made. Back in 2025, at the Italian Global Series Festival, co-creator of the show, Mark Gatiss, had revealed that it would be quite difficult to make a new season of the show because"Benedict and Martin didn't want to do [it] anymore."Martin Freeman reportedly stopped enjoying the show's process after a while and felt that the fans were putting pressure on the show to perform in a certain way. Speaking to The Telegraph, Benedict Cumberbatch had talked about Freeman's opinions, saying,"It's pretty pathetic if that's all it takes to let you not want to take a grip of your reality. What, because of expectations? I don't know. I don't necessarily agree with that."Cumberbatch's blunt statement about how he did not agree with Freeman led to speculations that the two actors did not get along too well and weren't keen on working together. However, as reported by TVinsider, both Cumberbatch and Freeman were recently spotted sitting together at Wimbledon along with Cumberbatch's wife, Sophie Hunter.Martin Freeman, Sophie Hunter, and Benedict Cumberbatch at Day Twelve: The Championships - Wimbledon 2026 - Source: GettyThis makes one wonder if their disagreement or feud is over and if perhaps they are ready to work together. Their being spotted together has also led to fans of the show being hopeful about a potential Season 5.Steven Moffat's updateRecently, in a conversation with the Half Picture podcast, Steven Moffat shared an update that has further given fans hope for a new season of the show.Moffat spoke about the show, saying,"If I can persuade everybody else, of course I'd revisit it. Can you ever say that you've run out of Sherlock Holmes stories? There are 60 originals. We've done, what is it, 13 or 14?"He added,"There's loads more you could do with Sherlock. I'd quite like to revisit it simply because they would now - our two leads - be the normal age for Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson."Moffat also clarified that they won't be continuing the story right from where Season 4 ended. If a new season of the show is made, it would follow the leads when they are slightly older and in a different phase of life. As Moffat said,"We were conscious that we were doing the beginning of the story… So I'd quite like to see them as their more middle-aged, settled versions. I don't think it's used up."A new season of the BBC show hasn't been confirmed. While there are multiple hints suggesting that a new season might be in the books, it's all just speculation till now.Stay tuned for more updates.Sherlock is streaming on Disney+.For more articles like this, follow Soapcentral.
