Shrinking returned to our laptop screens this week with the third season. After Jimmy made peace with Louis Winston in the season 2 finale, Jimmy has to deal with Alice leaving home to go to college in this season. Moreover, there is also the potential romance with Sofi, played by Jason Segel's How I Met Your Mother co-star Cobie Smulders.

Season 3 premiered this Wednesday, and as usual, several online publications interviewed the cast of the series. One of these interviews was the one that Segel gave to Collider after the Shrinking Season 3 premiere. In that interview, the actor discussed the premiere, but the highlight of the interview was when he expressed the desire to therapize one of Slow Horses' Gary Oldman's characters.

Shrinking: Which Gary Oldman does Segel want to therapize?

The Collider interview was one of the more casual ones, in which Jason Segel discussed a wide range of topics, including his favorite director and Michael J. Fox's involvement in the series. The conversation shifted to an actor and a character that he would like to see in Shrinking. The Collider reporter asked:

"Is there a character from another show that you would love to have sit in your office, or Jimmy’s office, for therapy? When you watch TV shows, do you think, “I would just love to get that character in therapy with Jimmy”?"

To this, Segel responded:

"I don’t watch all that much, but I would kill to be able to act with Gary Oldman. His character from Slow Horses, or any character he’s ever played. I would love to therapize his Dracula."

Hearing this, the Collider reporter humorously suggested that the Slow Horses actor could play multiple characters in one episode.

What is Shrinking Season 3 about?

The season 3 premiere establishes Jimmy's character arc for the rest of the season. The titular therapist is dealing with his daughter's upcoming high-school graduation, as she is leaving home for college. Moreover, his boss, Paul, is pushing Jimmy to get back into the dating scene after his wife's passing. Segel addressed Jimmy's character arc in the current season:

“We spent Seasons 1 and 2 getting Jimmy to zero, getting him out of this hole of grief and depression he was in. The worst thing happened, and then [in] Season 2 [he was] cleaning up the wreckage that still existed in his life. I think at zero, Jimmy looked forward and realized,’ Oh, my God, everything that I had constructed is going away. My wife is gone. My daughter is leaving.’ I think where we find Jimmy is, ‘Oh, no, did the best part happen? Is the good part of life done? And now I just endure the next 40 years as an observer?’”

Jason Segel then added:

“I think some of us have dealt with that, been at a life changing moment or a crossroads, or something significant ends, and you’re like, ‘Well, I guess it’s done.’ And so, yeah, moving forward sounds fun, but it also means stepping into the unknown.”

The Shrinking Season 3 premiere is currently streaming on Apple TV. Catch it before the second episode streams this Wednesday.
