Slow Horses Season 6 premiere sets a deadly conspiracy against Slough House as River's father returns - recap ahead

Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 is titled 'Circle of Life' and was released on Apple TV on September 16. The latest entry in the platform's spy thriller series is based on Mick Herron's novels, Joe Country and Slough House.

The Slow Horses Season 6 premiere set a deadly conspiracy against Slough House as River's father, Frank Harkness, returned during David Cartwright's funeral. While former Slough House agents turned up dead, the existing horses were erased from the Park's records, suggesting that somebody was intentionally targeting Jackson Lamb and his agents.

Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 recap: A former Slough House Agent is killed

The Slow Horses Season 6 premiere started with the brutal and horrific death of Struan Loy, a former agent at Slough House, who lived his life in retirement by teaching karate and building a new business. Struan Loy's business model was simple. He was convinced that shipping containers would make great tiny apartments, to the point that he lived inside a container himself. While the idea seemed ridiculous, Loy was convinced it would reap him good profits.

Loy was happy when a couple showed up at his container home, looking for one of his studio apartments. While the couple looked strange, Loy was oblivious to their antics. By the time Loy realized something was wrong in Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1, he was already inside with the couple, who showed their true colours. The couple broke one of Loy's arms, set his container house on fire and left him to die.

Diana Taverner filed Loy's death as accidental and instructed Emma Flyte (Head of the Dogs at the Park) not to report it to Jackson Lamb. But Emma followed protocol and approached Jackson at an Italian restaurant, where she handed him Loy's file. While Jackson feigned ignorance about Loy's death, he and River concluded that it was not an accident. Lamb instructed Roddy Ho to look into other former agents.

Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 1 recap: Slough House is taken off the Park's records

While Lamb dealt with Loy's death in the Slow Horses Season 6 premiere, the Slough House agents faced another problem. When the agents realized they hadn't received their salaries for the month, Roddy Ho dug into it and discovered Slough House had been erased from the Park's servers. While this was strange, Lamb refused to work without pay and left abruptly. Elsewhere, Cole encountered a strange man at the office, revealed to be an estate agent, likely sent by Diana to audit the assets.

After learning that Slough House had been taken off Park's payroll in Slow Horses Season 6, Catherine Standish decided to take matters into her own hands. She believed that it was a glitch in the system and approached Moira about it. Catherine discovered their erasure was not an accidental blunder but was specifically ordered by one of the higher-ups.

The latter half of the Slow Horses Season 6 premiere saw David Cartwright's funeral, which became the setting for many reveals and confrontations. While Lamb confronted Diana about their situation, her conversation with Peter Judd revealed that the funding came from a wealthy patron. However, Diana maintained that she did not know about the Slough House's erasure from the Park's records.

Elsewhere, a grief-stricken River was upset with his grandfather's unceremonious funeral, which was organized by the Park. While River wanted to acknowledge David's real role in the agency, he could not out his secret. Still, he delivered a heartfelt speech that kept his secret but paid him respect.

In the final moments of the Slow Horses Season 6 premiere, River noticed his father, Frank Harkness, waiting outside the Church. While the cold mercenary maintained that he was paying his respects, River naturally did not buy into his lies. River tried to confront his father and even jumped onto his car but Frank eventually escaped from the service.

The final moments of Episode 1 saw the same killer couple kill off another former Slough House agent, Kay White. The couple picked up another target from their list and then set their sights on River next, concluding the premiere on a chilling note.
