Sounds of Winter Episode 5 is out now on Netflix, and the episode introduces viewers to a new character, Tsukuda Takeshi, a character played by Hosoda Kanata. Takeshi is Ayana's ex-boyfriend from her college days.
Unlike the previous episodes, the latest episode doesn't introduce Kanata's character in the present day but takes the viewers into the past, showing the story of how they met and the reason behind their breakup.
In the Sounds of Winter episode 5, Takeshi proposes to Ayana after seeing her crying while reading a novel. Turns out, she wasn't crying but was using the ear drops that made it seem like she was crying. The two eventually started hanging out and grew closer, turning their friendship into a relationship.
However, after staying together for a few months, Takeshi decided to break up with her, stating she didn't love him enough. Although they cared for each other, their understanding of love seemed to differ.

Sounds of Winter episode 5 recap: Ayana gets into an argument with her university friend

Sounds of Winter episode 5 focuses on Ayana's university days in 2018 and her relationship with her college boyfriend. However, before their story begins, the episode opens with Ayana having a conversation with her friend Maki.
Ayana suggested that Maki leave her boyfriend after she found out that she was getting cheated on. Turns out, Maki's boyfriend was married as well. But Maki, in return, says that he was just lying down with another woman and she doesn't care even if he is involved with someone.
Ayana advises her to focus on herself and stay away from her boyfriend, as there's no future ahead of them, considering he is already married to another woman, but Maki adds that she cares more about the present rather than the future.
Ayana clearly wanted good for her friend and didn't want her to get hurt. Though En Chan tries to make Maki understand that Ayana is worried for her, Maki says that she never asked for it.
The episode also focused briefly on Kotaro and Ayana, who worked in the same restaurant.
Sounds of Winter episode 5 recap: Takeshi proposes to Ayana

At the beginning of the Sounds of Winter episode 5, Ayana is seen reading a novel with tears in her eyes. A guy from her university, Takeshi, sees her and instantly falls for her. Later, he proposes to her in the classroom, adding that he found her sensitive side beautiful.
However, Ayana clarifies that she wasn't actually crying and was only using eye drops, explaining that she does not consider herself to be particularly sensitive. Ayana's reply makes Takeshi embarrassed and surprised at the same time. Ayana gives the proposal a thought and asks Takeshi for a movie date.
The two gradually grow closer through their frequent meetings and eventually begin dating. Takeshi was extremely kind and thoughtful and even wrote a letter for her on her birthday. On the other side, Ayana was extremely open about her feelings. The episode also focused on Ayana's fun side, something that Takeshi fell for.
The two plan their date at a zoo, and when Ayana thanked him for confessing his feelings in the first place, he started to cry and revealed that she was his first girlfriend. At the same time, he was also very scared of losing her and even asked her if she ever had a boyfriend. On coming to know that she was dumped in high school, he asks her if she still meets him.
While he liked her truly, at one point, he expressed that nothing lasts forever, hinting at their relationship. After certain replies, Ayana started believing that Takeshi didn't trust her enough.
Takeshi breaks up with Ayana despite their growing bond
Two months after their picnic date, Takeshi breaks up with Ayana, wishing she had loved him more. As for Ayana, she expresses that she tried her best and wanted to be with him. However, Takeshi was firm on his decision, which led to their breakup.
At the end of the Sounds of Winter episode 5, Ayana reflects on their time together, adding that Takeshi was very kind to her, especially after learning that he had stayed up all night before their picnic date because of the excitement.
