The Night Agent Season 3 puts Peter in a difficult position, not just because of the case that he has in his hand, but also because of the death of a character.
Throughout the three seasons of this series, many characters have met their demise, which has been a crucial part in the development of the other characters. The death of this character in The Night Agent has also been a significant aspect of the storyline, as noted by creator Shawn Ryan.
Please be prepared for the spoilers ahead.
Shawn Ryan opens up about the decision to kill Catherine in The Night Agent Season 3
Catherine has been a significant part of the storyline, especially because of her distinct leadership role in the storyline. Creator Shawn Ryan indicates that the decision to kill Catherine was taken after his team “spent a lot of time talking” about the different “permutations” of the storyline.
Time and again, Shawn Ryan has noted that the storyline of The Night Agent focuses on “Peter’s evolution." Each season dives into the cases that Peter finds himself entangled with, which eventually lead to the development of his character. In the third season of The Night Agent, Shawn Ryan and his team wanted “to see him start to fully become a little bit more comfortable as a night agent.”
This aspect can be easily seen in the manner in which Peter navigates through the case to track down Jay. They also wanted Peter to “step into some leadership shoes”. Now, for Peter to take on a more leadership role in the storyline, Catherine’s presence is undeniably a factor that clashes with it. Hence, the aspect of Peter having no other way but to navigate through the whole case without Catherine’s “mentorship and leadership" is a propelling factor that “forces him to grow a little bit more into that role."
The Night Agent is a series that focuses on "evolution"; hence, unless Peter comes across challenges that give him the scope to grow, the storyline will not progress in a positive direction. Catherine’s death not only provides a scope for Peter to grow as a leader but also paves the way for more storylines to arise for the upcoming seasons if the series continues.
While discussing Amanda Warren’s reaction when Shawn Ryan told her about Catherine’s death, Shawn Ryan indicates that Warren “totally understood” the vision that the writers had for the storyline and was also a “real, true team player in that regard."
Amanda Warren’s Catherine dies in a devastating manner in the second episode of The Night Agent Season 3. While following the car Monroe is in, Catherine and her team mistakenly get diverted to follow a decoy car, which is filled with explosives. The moment this decoy car stops, Catherine approaches the vehicle, unaware that it is carrying explosives.
She opens that car door, right after which the explosion bursts and ends her life. Peter is completely shocked to have lost the mentor he had in his life; however, he has to navigate through the dangerous case without Catherine’s help, helping him grow as a leader.
Shawn Ryan, while discussing the changes in storytelling, points out that “storytelling demands more fluidity”. This was also the reason behind not bringing in Rose for the third season. Though Rose is mentioned throughout the third season, she does not appear.
Rose and Peter’s dynamic in The Night Agent is also an integral part of the series. Though the two of them parted ways at the end of the second season, Shawn Ryan adds that Peter is thinking about achieving “some balance” in his life.
On the other hand, Gabriel Basso notes that Peter “wants a relationship," and “if anyone, he would probably try to find Rose again”. Both of their words raise the anticipation for the future of the series. If the series continues for another season, the storyline can explore this aspect of Peter’s life.
