Spider-Noir, Amazon's Spider-Man spin-off, just revealed its first look and the title will feature Nicolas Cage. The first look serves to set a clearer sense of the series’ shadowy tone and a setting that hints at the distinct 1930s.
The project is situated during the time of the Great Depression and in a city that is a fictional, alternate version of New York City. If you did not imagine seeing Spider-Man as an aging private investigator, then this movie realizes that wish for you.
Spider-Noir featuring Nicolas Cage: Key Details
We'll see this version of the much-celebrated superhero navigate nightclubs and the worlds inside skyscrapers. But he will also be reckoning with his past life as the protector of the city and its people.
The announcement has come with two batches of first-look images. One set of first-look images presents Cage’s Spider-Noir in a moody monochrome setting.
It is the energy carried by trench coats and rain-slicked streets reminiscent of the noir genre. The other is starkly different. It emanates a vintage pulp paperbacks vibe. Together, the images underline the show’s stylistic range rather than locking it into a single visual mode.
The first-look images are in line with how Spider-Noir premieres. Each episode will be seen in these two formats: a monochrome version that captures classic neo-noir style.
A color version will also be included, which will be inspired by pulp-fiction imagery. This release pattern of the series reflects an attempt to bridge old Hollywood visuals with modern superhero storytelling.
Creative leads have previously spoken on how Spider-Noir expands on the character’s origins in the animated Spider-Verse films. Figures that fans long recognize as being associated with Spider-Man, such as Black Cat and Silvermane, have been reworked.
Along with Sandman, these characters will be brought in to fit the 1930s milieu, appearing as femme fatales, enforcers, and racketeers instead of their traditional modern-era renditions.
The cast of the show includes
- Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly / The Spider
- Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson
- Brendan Gleeson as Silvermane
- Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy
- Abraham Popoola as [character name not yet disclosed]
- Jack Huston as Flint Marko
- Karen Rodriguez as Janet
The show is developed for television by Oren Uziel. He also serves as co-showrunner alongside Steve Lightfoot. Uziel hinted that the show is going to be a different approach to superhero storytelling.
It is a character-driven noir homage first and a superhero series second. The heart of the title is carried by Cage’s performance as a worn-down hero living with the consequences of earlier choices. How all of it comes together can only be observed after the show debuts on MGM+.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller are producing the show after previously shepherding the Spider-Verse films. The filming locations for Amazon's Spider-Noir are set across Los Angeles.
