"Step Into My Office", the first episode of Spider-Noir differentiates itself from other Spider-Man projects (live-action and animated) by setting up a noir thriller set in 1933. The 47-minute episode introduces most of the key characters who will play an important role in this season.Private investigator Ben Reilly comes across not one but two super-powered people in this epsiode and further sets up the mystery of this series. The first episode however, was a rather low-key episode, featuring very little of Spider-Man, or "The Spider" as the wall crawler is referred to as in Spider-Noir's continuity."“Spider-Noir” tells the story of Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero."Spider-Noir Episode 1 recap: View this post on Instagram Instagram PostThe episode opens with a narration as The Spider swings across New York, as we learn that this version of Spider-Man had a slightly different backstory. In this continuity, Ben got the "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" quote from his girlfriend Ruby instead of his uncle. He planned to ask her to marry him, but Ruby died by drowning despite The Spider trying his best to save her. Now, five years since Ruby's passing, Ben has given up his Vigilante life and works as a private investigator. A man named Winston hires Ben to track someone called Addison. Another PI Donegal, is also hired by Winston to track Addison. Donegal corners Addison in the factory of an oil corporation but is shocked to see that the latter has fire-powers.Donegal shoots Addison dead, but the latter's fire is exposed to the oil causing an explosion. Ben saves his competitor's life and the two decide to investigate Winston together. They discover that the man who hired them works for the mob boss Silvermane. Donegal expresses desire to shakedown Winston for more money, while Ben refuses. One of the important plotlines of this Spider-Noir episode is Addison burning down Silvermane's mansion under someone's orders. This event probably gives the mob boss an idea to hire Flint Marko/Sandman, Dirk Leydon/Megawatt, and Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone as henchmen in an upcoming episode.Manwhile, we see Spider-Noir's version of Robbie Robertson, who is aware that Ben is The Spider. Robbie tries to convince Ben to return as The Spider, but the latter refuses, revealing a more jaded and cynical hero than Spider-Man fams are used to seeing. The two visit the morgue and examine Addison's remains. Ben requests Robbie to not publish the news of Addison's death and tries contacting Donegal to meet him.Meanwhile, a man named Carmedy hires Ben as the former suspects his wife Cat Hardy of infidelity. Ben follows Cat to a hotel room and sees that she is struggling with the mayoral candidate Morris. Ben stops the politician by webbing him up, letting Cat escape. Ben had taken photograph of the encounter between Morris and Cat before intervening.Ben lies to Cat's husband, but decides to blackmail Cat with the pictures and the negatives. When he vists Cat's club to blackmail her, she calls in her bodyguard, Flint Marko, to throw Ben out. Meanwhile, Silvermane is holding Donegal hostage and learns that the investigator fatally shot Addison. After killing Donegal, Silvermane orders Winston to bring in Ben.Meanwhile, Flint follows Ben to an abandoned building, and Reilly is aware that Marko is behind him. Flint wants the negative as Ben already handed over photographs to Cat at the club. Marko throws Ben off the building, but he swings up to the floor and overpowers Marko, who is also using his sand powers. Cat stops the fight, as Ben hands over the negatives to her.Next day, an irate Janet, Ben's assistant, quits because she hasn't been paid for a while. That's when Cat walks in, hiring Ben to find a missing Flint Marko, ending the first episode of Spider-Noir.The entirety of the new live-action Spider-Man show is accessible through streaming on Prime Video.
