Star Trek legend William Shatner breaks silence around battling Stage 4 cancer

Star Trek star William Shatner is currently battling stage 4 cancer at UCLA Health in Los Angeles. William is remembered by generations of fans as someone who takes on the unknown as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, boldly leading the starship Enterprise into the final frontier. Today, the 95-year-old actor opened about a very different journey.

A few hours ago on CBS Mornings, Shatner and his daughter finally revealed their journey of fighting metastatic cancer at the very same time. As per the latest reports, they are now both cancer-free. They told Jonathan Vigilotti candidly how they helped each other through it.

In 2023, William was diagnosed with Stage 4 malignant melanoma after a doctor primarily noticed a lump on his face, which he misidentified as a salivary gland issue. When the cancer eventually spread to his lungs and brain, he underwent an immunotherapy.

Melanie was also diagnosed with stage 4 HER2-positive breast cancer. She underwent months of chemotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation, a double mastectomy, and a year of immunotherapy, leaning on her father for support.

The Star Trek artist shares his cancer story Jonathan Vigilotti

When Jonathan asks William about the lump, he replies that a kind doctor first told him it was a salivary gland and advised him to message the area. The doctor placed his hands there and said, in a calm but serious way, that the lump needed to be removed.

William then went to an oncologist who explained that surgery was urgent because the disease had already spread. When Jonathan interrupts and says that the lump had reached his brain, the star added,

"It had spread to my brain. There were little points of light in my brain and little points of light, I think, in my lungs."

The Star Trek actor meant that it had reached his brain, where small points of lights appeared, and similar points of lights were also found in his lungs. He further explained that the lump was actually a stage four malignant melanoma.

The Star Trek actor revealed that her daughter had helped him so much to fight the disease. He ended the podcast by saying that the cancer had deepened the relationship between him and his daughter and even led them to share his journey through the podcast.

He expressed that he now holds a greater appreciation for her as an adult. He also explained that he initially chose not to disclose his diagnosis because he feared it might affect his chances of finding work.
