What to expect in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Episode 5?
In the previous episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, audience learn that Klingon Empire could be heading for extinction. After The Burn, the Klingon species lost their homeworld and were seeking refuge in other places across the galaxy. While the Federation tried to help them, their honor code forbid them to accept any kind of charity from other species.
At the Starfleet Academy, Cadet Jay-Den Kraag is dealing with his own past as a Klingon. Jay-Den chose to be a healer instead of a Klingon Warrior, a choice that would be looked down upon in his own species. When The Doctor puts together a debate where he asks the students if the Federation should help Klingons, Jay-Den insists that Klingons are responsible for their own fate.
In Episode 4 flashbacks, it Jay-Den is shown having dreams to join the Academy one day. His brother is highly supportive of his dreams to become a healer. Unfortunately, his brother dies and later he is abandoned on a planet by his father. But Lura Thok will make Jay-Den realize that his parents only wanted him to let go of the Klingons ideals so he can live his dream.
The Federation wanted to offer Faal Alpha to Klingons, but they refuse to take the charity. Jay-Den will instead help concoct the idea of staging a fake battle to make the Klingons believe that they have conquered the planet. This will ensure that the species survives and there is no harm done. The plan works and the Klingon Empire has a new homeworld.
In Episode 5, we will see the students at the Academy come upon a new challenge in this defining moment in the galaxy’s history post The Burn. They must confront the issue on board the USS Athena, as newly formed relationships are put to test. In an interview with TrekMovie.com, executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau teased that ‘episode 5 is essentially a love letter to Deep Space Nine.’
