Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 - Decoding Sybok's unexpected return 

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 7, titled Like Chronitons Through The Hourglass, premiered on Thursday, September 3, 2026, on Paramount+.

The episode is written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff and directed by Anna Dokoza. In this week's episode, the Enterprise was trapped in a new frame of reality, a soap opera setting (all thanks to Trelane's genre-changing gimmicks). However, what stands out in the episode is Sybok's unexpected return. In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 7, titled The Serene Squall, Spock tries to free his estranged half-sibling from rehabilitation.

Star Trek movie enthusiasts know that Sybok plays the main antagonist in 1989's The Final Frontier. In this episode, his character is twisted to fit the episode's approach.

In Episode 7 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, La'An (Christina Chong) travels back to the Enterprise and brings Sybok. Sybok initially doesn't understand why he has to give his heart to Spock. Eventually, La'An and Sybok play kal-toh, a Vulcan game of logic. If she wins, he will give his heart to Spock. On the shuttle, La'An leans forward and whispers kal-toh into his ear. He pulls back and realizes she has won the game. Sybok pulls a phaser on her. La'An realizes he wasn't going to help Spock, but he offers to escape with her. She is offended by the offer, defends Spock, and promises she will not leave without a heart for Spock.

Sybok feels irritated as he realizes everyone loves Spock. He tries to change the course of the shuttle; La'An is stunned as Sybok insists that Spock isn't the only one who can be good.

Sybok in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 7

In Episode 7 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, Anson Mount's Pike wakes in sickbay with a bandage on his head. The lights are brighter, and things look hazy. Dr. M'Benga tells him he has had a terrible accident. Dr. M'Benga fears Pike has cosmic amnesia. Pike then hears background music and worries they are stuck in a musical. Chapel joins them and reveals Spock had suffered a blunt force trauma in the accident, and they put him in an induced coma.

Pike slowly finds that the crew is being overdramatic, and it's not their usual behavior. Dr. Chivers (Deidre Hall) appears, and Pike asks Dr. Chivers about the crew's melodramatic behavior. Dr. Chivers is annoyed and wants him to focus on the test. It seems like Pike is amidst a soap opera setting, and only he remembers what life was like before. In the next scene, we find out that someone is watching Pike and Dr. Chivers from different screens.

Uhura visits Chapel and offers to be Spock's donor. However, she is not a match. Her DNA reveals something else, though. La'An returns to USS Enterprise with a donor. As she removes the black hood from the donor, she reveals a man who looks identical to Spock. It is revealed that Spock's half-brother is Sybok.

With Spock nearing death, everyone believes they can clone a heart for Spock from his siblings. But things turn weird. Sybok is different from the one Trekkies know. The two Vulcans aren't twins, as Spock clarifies in the end when they all return to reality. There's no such thing as a living heart transplant. However, Trelane's reality-altering antics expose one ultimate truth: the crew members' emotions are real. For instance, La'An turns emotional after she parted ways with Spock.

New episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 will be released on Paramount+ every Thursday.
