One Chicago franchise is returning with a Chicago Fire and Chicago Med crossover on October 7, 2026, exclusively on NBC. The show already has a reputation for crossovers by bringing fan-favorite storylines and characters from the two hit procedurals together.

According to Chicago Med's Steven Weber, a new crossover has already been confirmed for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire which will reportedly take place early in their respective new seasons. Weber is starting his seventh season on Chicago Med as Dr. Dean Archer and he shared the news during a panel at Flashback Weekend in Chicago, held on August 1 and 2.

The star's journey in Chicago Med as Dr. Dean has been extraordinary so far. He is a military surgeon, but he previously oversaw Dr. Ethan Choi during his active duty. In Season 6, he continues to struggle with PTSD, but does not like to resort to mental health treatments. As a result, it often leads to conflict with Dr. Charles.

At the convention, Steve Weber said that crossovers are very enjoyable and further revealed that he is actually filming one today. He added that the big events are treated as major productions, and Dick Wolf enjoys them. As a result, the team now feels obligated to continue making them.

Steve further added,

"It drives everybody insane because it's a coordinating nightmare. Med, P.D., and Fire are three different worlds.

Weber further explained that the dynamics between the groups were almost like family, but not identical. He noted that they carried different energies, worked under different executives, and were made up of different people.

Because of those differences, he stressed that they had to figure out how to interact, cooperate, and complete their task on schedule in order to be ready for the ratings surge.

What does the crossover indicate?

The Chicago Fire and Chicago Med crossover indicates that Dr. Dean could directly be involved in resolving Fire's cliffhanger. In the 2025 crossover, Archer appeared with Severide and Pascal, but this new tease suggests that he may return in a crucial role.

The cliffhanger left most of Firehouse 51 members in danger, with firefighters trapped inside a burning building and others caught on a ladder outside. If one of them suffers severe injuries, the storyline may shift to the hospital, that is, to Chicago Med, where Archer could either save the firefighter's life or deliver the devastating news to 51 that they have lost one of their own.
