Stuart Fails to Save the Universe creators reveal why they broke up a beloved Big Bang Theory couple

Episode 2 of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe brings forth a new set of challenges for Stuart and his friends. The new universe in which he arrives with Bert and Barry initially seems to be a great place, as everyone seems to be always happy. However, soon they realize that this universe is controlled by AI and everyone has an implant on their neck, which punishes them if they are not happy.

Just as in the previous episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, in this universe, Stuart also comes across a familiar face. Penny is back, but this time, she is not with Leonard. Her storyline is completely different. Creators Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre, in a recent interview with Deadline, reveal the reason for this huge shift from the original series.

Penny and Leonard’s relationship has been a driving factor in The Big Bang Theory. From moving to the apartment next to Sheldon and Leonard to slowly forming a deep bond with the two of them, their relationship has been an integral part of the storyline.

However, in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, Penny’s storyline is completely different. She is no longer with Leonard; rather, this time she is the head of a rebellious group of trained soldiers who are working to bring down the AI that is controlling their lives.

Instead of the friendly version of Penny that the viewers saw in The Big Bang Theory, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe brings life to a Penny who does not hesitate before ordering her subordinates to kill someone for the greater good. She has no connection or relationship with Leonard in this universe.

Creator Bill Prady, in an interview with Deadline, reveals that “every universe gives every character a completely different history”. Hence, in this universe Penny and Leonard are not together, as there is “no continuity”. They also “lived a different life” in this universe along with the other “worlds”.

Penny has a “different experience” in this universe”. Chuck Lorre also adds that the Cheesecake Factory, which has been an intrinsic part of Penny’s life as she worked there in The Big Bang Theory, is not present in this universe. Each of these circumstances has shaped Penny’s distinct character in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.

Chuck Lorre also added that a “promise” was made to make sure that a completely new “version” of their character would be given, which they “never got to play before”. In the second episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, Stuart, Bert, and Barry have to find ways to return to their universe before they are killed by Penny and her team. Initially, Penny and her team of rebels thought that Stuart would be able to help them get rid of the AI.

However, when they found out that they do not know how to solve the issue, Penny ordered her subordinate, Jack, to kill them, as they are of no use. Barry then runs away with the device and starts it. It eventually leads them to a universe where magic is real.

On the other hand, Penny and her team are attacked by AI drones. With just the two episodes of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the unique storyline has been able to grab the attention of the viewers. There is a blend of humor and urgency in the situations that Stuart finds himself in as he tries to save the universe from impending danger.
