Stuart Fails to Save the Universe and Young Sheldon are both spinoffs of The Big Bang Theory, but the former has managed to fix a canon trap the latter couldn't. Since Young Sheldon, as the title suggests, is about the younger years of Sheldon Cooper, the show got to build on everything adult Sheldon had mentioned about his childhood in The Big Bang Theory. However, the prequel diverted a lot from the canon that The Big Bang Theory had established, which left fans dissatisfied. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has managed to be entertaining without worrying about canon.Young Sheldon diverted from canonSince The Big Bang Theory was made before Young Sheldon, the show not only established the character of adult Sheldon Cooper but also his younger self. Adult Sheldon, throughout the show, mentioned how his childhood and family members were. Young Sheldon thus already had the canon it needed to follow. All it had to do was stick to key canon events while joining them together however they wanted to.However, the mistake Young Sheldon made was that it diverted from the canon set by The Big Bang Theory. The character of George Sr. in the prequel doesn't match how Sheldon describes him in the original show. In the original show, adult Sheldon described his father as a terrible, unfaithful man whom he once caught cheating with another woman (which supposedly led to his habit of knocking three times).But in Young Sheldon, George Sr. is portrayed as a loving and supportive father. The cheating incident is revealed to be a roleplay between Mary and George Sr., which Sheldon misunderstood. Moreover, Meemaw in the original show and Meemaw in Young Sheldon are poles apart. There are several such instances of the prequel diverting from the canon established by the original show.Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is taking risks without diverting from The Big Bang Theory's canonStuart Fails to Save the Universe, however, doesn't have the same problem as Young Sheldon. It does feature many characters from The Big Bang Theory, including some of the main cast, but it hasn't diverted from the canon. In fact, the show is made in such a way that it cannot change anything about the canon. The apocalypse was created when Stuart had accidentally damaged a device made by Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, and Howard Wolowitz.Stuart is then visited by his alternate self from another universe, who tells him that if he is able to retrieve that device and fix it, he can undo the apocalypse. Stuart, Bert, Denise, and Kripke thus go on a mission to find the device. We see them visit multiple alternate universes and meet not only their alternate selves but also the alternate selves of the main characters of The Big Bang Theory.We have already seen alternate selves of Raj Koothrappali, Bernadette Rostenkowski, Penny, and Amy Farrah Fowler. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe thus explores different stories revolving around familiar characters without changing anything about the original characters and their stories.We see the alternate selves of the characters do bizarre things, but that doesn't change anything that happened in The Big Bang Theory. By making the existence and exploration of the multiverse a core element of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady have clearly avoided the burden of sticking to canon that Young Sheldon couldn't.Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 1 will come to an end with its final episode on September 24, 2026.
