Supernatural fans tend to debate which of the two Winchester brothers is more powerful. A lot of viewers target Dean Winchester and his fierce fighting abilities, whereas some others focus on Sam and his peculiar psychic abilities.

The show gives both brothers moments of huge strength and dark weakness. Yet many sources and storylines suggest that Dean Winchester edges ahead overall in real combat power, noting his experience, deadly weapons, and the Mark of Cain.

At the same time, Sam’s demon blood abilities and intelligence cannot be ignored. Looking at both brothers together shows how their different strengths shape Supernatural.

Base strength comparison

In the early seasons of Supernatural, both brothers fight as mostly human hunters. Dean Winchester shows greater skill in straight fights. The episode titled 'Sex and Violence' has the clearest example. A siren turns the brothers against each other, and Dean wins the brutal fight when both are trying to kill. A Reddit user stated,

"In Season 4- Episode 14, Sex and Violence, Dean and Sam are under the influence of a Siren and fight it out at the end of the episode. It's a good fight, and in the end, Dean beats Sam and is about to kill him until Bobby arrives and kills the Siren, cutting off the influence."

Sources also note that Sam is taller and may be physically stronger, but Dean is the better-trained brawler. He grew up hunting while Sam studied at college. That longer experience and time in Hell hardened Dean in battle.

Supernatural power-ups

Sam gains power in Supernatural when he starts using demon blood. He is able to move things with his mind and can rid or even slay demons without spells. Dean Winchester subsequently becomes the bearer of the Mark of Cain and the First Blade, which makes him an invincible fighter.

One of the Reddit users asked,

"I mean, we've seen them fight before, but back in season 4, Sam was all pumped up on Demon Blood, and I guess he 'won'. And then again in the Season 10 finale, but Dean was all pumped up thanks to The Mark. What other times have they had full-on fist fights with each other??"

The Mark is also attributed to the Darkness, which is on the same level as God, and, as a result, the killing of Dean has become almost impossible. In Season 15, Lilith even says she allowed Sam to kill her, but Abaddon never wanted to die. Dean earned victory through the Mark. Many sources say this form makes Dean Winchester stronger than Sam overall.

Brains & story power

Power in Supernatural is not only about muscles or magic. Sam often shows greater book learning and flexible thinking. He reads lore fast and finds ways to exploit monster weaknesses when Dean Winchester is ready to charge in. Yet the story keeps giving Dean the most decisive roles. He turns into the carrier of the Mark of Cain.

Dean is also the one who kills bigger villains than Sam, like the entity of Death and Abaddon. Because of these key wins, the narrative treats Dean as the stronger hero.
