For 8 years, Yellowstone fans have become familiar with Kevin Costner's portrayal of John Dutton III, but today former Paramount president Kevin Kay revealed a surprising secret that people don't know. Kay spoke with The Joint Venture Show and shared notable insights about the series.
Kay mentioned that co-creator Taylor Sheridan originally imagined someone else for the story's lead character. The former network president further said that casting Costner was not straightforward, as the star didn't like to do TV shows.
He further clarified that Costner’s dislike of doing shows originated from his earlier experience of working on Hatfields & McCoys, but after reading the Yellowstone script, he became interested in playing John Dutton. According to Collider, the actor experienced challenges while showing real violence in Hatfields & McCoys.

Meet Taylor Sheridan's unrevealed lead for Yellowstone
Today, the Paramount president, Kevin Kay, revealed that the showrunner of Yellowstone had someone else in mind to lead the series. He said,
"Taylor wanted Jeff Bridges for the role. He had worked with Jeff on Hell or High Water, and he really liked him, and he thought he would be great."
Kay praised the actor and said that he was very talented, but at that time her focus was only on marketing, the images of a cowboy on horseback, and the film poster. She further admitted that she first imagined Jeff in that role, but suddenly she changed her mind to cast Costner. In the end, the team succeeded in getting Costner for the role of John Dutton.
Jeff might have shaped Yellowstone's lead in a very different way, but Sheridan already knew him since 2016, when both of them collaborated on Hell or High Water. In that show, Jeff played Marcus Hamilton, and Sheridan wrote the script.
The decision to cast Costner for the role worked well until the final season. During season 5's production, Costner experienced serious scheduling conflicts and creative disagreements that forced him to leave the show earlier than expected. No one knows how things might have turned out if Jeff took the role. But Costner has now become closely linked with the identity of the series.
