Teach You a Lesson Episode 1 recap: Hwa-jin's fight against student bullies begins

Netflix's latest K-drama, Teach You a Lesson, is gaining everyone's attention due to its controversial themes of punishing school bullies through violence.

The K-drama begins with a tragic incident taking place as Dae-seok, a bullied student of Daehan High School, jumps from the school building and commits s*icide. This affects Gyeong-min, another bullied student, deeply. With Dae-seok's death, he again becomes the victim of the school bullies.

However, this time around, he is helped by Na Hwa-jin, who beats the school bully ruthlessly.

Here's what happened in the premiere episode of Teach You a Lesson.

Teach You a Lesson Episode 1 recap: Na Hwa-jin arrives at Daehan High School

After the death of Dae-seok in the premiere episode of Teach You a Lesson, Gyeong-min thinks that the bullies, Jun-hyeong and his friends, will stop bullying the other students. However, as the police do not take any action against them, his hopes die.

In a flashback scene, it is revealed that Gyeong-min used to be the outcast whom Jun-hyeong and his friends bullied. However, after Dae-seok takes a stand for one of their teachers with whom Jun-hyeong misbehaves, their attention turns toward him.

With his death, Gyeong-min again becomes the target. Later, one of Jun-hyeong's friends approaches him and starts kicking him. Just then, Na Hwa-jin makes his entry and slaps the bully. The student tries to fight back but gets slapped again. Jun-hyeong arrives and warns him that he cannot use violence against a student like this, and asks the other student to record it.

However, this does not stop Hwa-jin as he continues beating him until the teachers and the principal arrive.

Later in the episode, Hwa-jin introduces himself as an inspector from the Korean Educational Rights Protection Bureau. He reveals that his position gives him the authority to use any kind of methods to help protect victims of bullying and make the bullies realise their mistakes.

The principal of the high school tries to warn him that Jun-hyeong comes from an influential background, as his father was a presidential candidate. However, the information did not seem to affect Hwa-jin as he asked the principal to make him the homeroom teacher of Jun-hyeong's class.

As he arrives in the classroom and asks about Dae-seok, an insensitive comment by one of the students makes Hwa-jin punish the whole class, and he asks all of them to hold a plank position. When Jun-hyeong refuses, Hwa-jin uses force against him and makes him join the other students.

Hwa-jin tries his best to punish Jun-hyeong in any way possible, and even reaches Assemblyman Ryu's house to drag Jun-hyeong back to school and complete his duties.

Teach You a Lesson Episode 1 recap: EPRB takes a shocking step to punish Jun-hyeong

In the premiere episode of Teach You a Lesson, Jun-hyeong tries to fight back against Hwa-jin and harms himself. He blames Hwa-jin, making his father come to school. As Hwa-jin does not back down, Assemblyman Ryu goes to meet Minister of Education, Gang-seok, who is also the founder of EPRB.

Ryu threatens Gang-seok, but it backfires on him later. He discovers that allegations of him being involved in crimes such as s*xual assault and bribery have spread throughout the internet, resulting in his arrest. He also learns that EPRB was behind the information leak to make his son realise his mistakes.

Elsewhere, Jun-hyeong now finds himself as the outcast of the school and, in a fit of rage, tries to commit a huge crime by locking his friends in the classroom and pouring gasoline around it. Hwa-jin comes in and starts a fire, making Jun-hyeong run for his life. He begs Hwa-jin to stop, as he does not want to die.

Hwa-jin then confronts him about Dae-seok's death, which he reveals was due to Jun-hyeong, who forced him to take such a tragic step. In a flashback scene, it is revealed that Jun-hyeong made Dae-seok's life miserable and even used his father's influence to destroy Dae-seok's father's business. When Dae-seok begged him to leave his father alone, Jun-hyeong told him to die to save his father. That's when Dae-seok decided to commit s*icide.

The episode ended with Jun-hyeong and his friends being arrested for their crimes, and EPRB left the school with their first win against the bullies.
