The latest sci-fi body horror series, The Beauty on Hulu, explores the plot of how a fatal sexually transmitted virus is spread through a beautifying treatment that transforms ideal beauty into a bone-chilling reality.
Its logline, as per IMDb, goes as follows:
Partners Drew Foster and Kara Vaughn investigate "the Beauty" STD causing aesthetic effects but proving lethal, evading corrupt officials and a mercenary targeting them amidst a suspected government conspiracy.
One can already presume that the series is not going to paint a pretty, rose-tinted picture. With the presence of dark elements such as body horror, gore, and sexual content, it is evident that The Beauty might not be a very comfortable watching experience for many.
Therefore, we have prepared a viewer's guide for you that can come in handy if you are curious to catch the series on Hulu. Keep reading to find out more.
The Beauty: Here's a viewer's guide for the latest Hulu horror series
Ryan Murphy and Matt Hodgson's The Beauty delves into a frightening story of how the cost of beauty comes with a heavy and irreversible price, which is death. We witness two FBI agents, Cooper Madsen and Jordan Bennett, who look into the horrifying case of an illegal cosmetic enhancement that takes the shape of an alarming epidemic.
It all begins at the Paris fashion show, when a supermodel meets her death after undergoing a riotous transformation. As more layers of the case get peeled one after another, we realize the colossal impact of the STI virus across different parts of the world.
The makers of The Beauty do not shy away from showcasing a raw and visually expressive portrayal of the consequences of the virus. The visual language is filled with sexual imagery, physical grotesquery, and brutality. It goes without saying that not everyone has an appetite to consume content of this genre. Unless you are a horror aficionado, you are likely to enjoy this series.
As per IMDb, the level of sex and nudity in the show is moderate. All the rest of the elements, including foul verbal language, violence, gore, alcohol, drugs, and scary scenes, are all strong in their rating.
However, an important thing to note is that the series is rather fast-paced. Each episode runs up to 24 to 40 minutes, as reported by Decider. Another positive aspect of the show is that it does not indulge in plenty of irrelevant subplots. They made the conscious choice of sticking to delivering the crux of the storyline, and it works well.
It has garnered decent ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb as well, scoring up to 74% and 6.0/10, respectively. Also, the series features some iconic actors in its cast, including Evan Peters, Ashton Kutcher, Anthony Ramos, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Pope, and Isabella Rossellini. Oh, we also have guest appearances by Meghan Trainor and Bella Hadid in the mix.
So if you feel you can sit through this murky, enthralling horror series regardless of its uneasiness, you might want to give it a try. If you do not have the bandwidth for something as intense as The Beauty, you may want to give it a miss.
