The Netflix and BBC show The Bombing of Pan Am 103 has just been released today for viewers of the Britain-based miniseries. The show retells the real-life tragedy of the passengers travelling on Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988. On that day, the Boeing 747 was going from London to New York City.

Shortly after departing, the aircraft exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, and all 259 passengers on board died. In addition, 11 residents on the ground were also killed after the debris fell onto the town.

According to the investigation reports, the bombing was carried out by Libyan agents. Further investigation revealed that two Libyan intelligence agents had already been arrested in Senegal earlier in 1988 with a device resembling the one used in the flight attack.

The shocking true story of the 1988 Boeing 747 explosion

Pan American Flight 103 was a scheduled passenger service operated on a Boeing 747 called Clipper Maid of the Seas. The journey began in Frankfurt, Germany, continued with a stop in London, then moved on to NYC, and was planned to finish in Detroit.

The flight carried 16 crew members and 243 passengers. The UN official Bernt Carlsson, 35 Syracuse University students, and musician Paul Jeffreys were travelling with other passengers. The students were returning to the U.S. for Christmas after completing their abroad studies.

The plane had just taken off, and soon, within an hour, the aircraft exploded in midair at about 30,000 feet above Lockerbie. The plane's major sections fell across the community, and the main fuselage struck a residential street. The disaster killed all 259 people on board and 11 residents on the ground.

How did the explosion happen?

In The Bombing of Pan Am 103, the investigators revealed that a bomb was concealed inside a radio and placed in luggage stored in the cargo hold. The device exploded at about 7:03 p.m. and caused severe damage that tore the entire aircraft.

The forward section separated and fell, while the remaining sections of the jet continued breaking apart as its engines kept running. Without the nose to stabilise it, the aircraft tilted downward and eventually dropped freely.

The sudden loss of pressure at 30,000 feet likely caused passengers and crew to be unconscious. The plane fell at nearly half the speed of sound and hit Lockerbie with its engines still running. As a result, it caused a huge explosion and destroyed major parts of the town.

The main culprits behind the Bombing of Pan Am 103

The Libyan intelligence agents Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi and Lamen Khalifa Fhimah carried out The Bombing of Pan Am 103. Investigators discovered that these two suspects were linked through several key pieces of evidence.

The trail of these two suspects was found with the help of clothes purchased in Malta, fragments of a Libyan-made timer recovered from the wreckage, and chemical traces of Semtex explosives.

As per the investigation reports, Abdel Basset used a false passport, and shopkeeper Tony Gauci later identified him as the man who purchased clothes packed with explosives. Later, Libya accepted responsibility and confirmed the involvement of its officials.
