The Empress Season 3: Everything you need to know before the series finale answers its biggest questions

Netflix has released the two-minute and twelve-second trailer for The Empress Season 3, bringing fans' wait to an end. It is created by Katharina Eyssen, famous for Holiday Secrets and Barcelona Crime, and stars Devrim Lingnau as Elisabeth von Wittelsbach and Philip Froissant as Franz Joseph. Season 3 is also bringing a new star, Dejan Bućin, as Count Andrássy.

The Empress Season 3 will revolve around Elisabeth as she tries to deal with a marriage that is on the verge of falling apart. On the other hand, she will also carry the weight of being an empress. At one point, she will leave Vienna to focus on her health and will cross paths with Count Andrássy. Their growing connection will add another complicated layer to her life. At the same time, Maximilian and Marie will be in their new chapter in Mexico.

Season 3, being the series finale of The Empress, will decide whether Elisabeth can save her crumbling marriage, find personal freedom away from court, and choose between duty and the unexpected connection she forms with Count Andrássy.

But before The Empress Season 3 is released on Netflix, now is a good time to take a look at what happened in Season 2.

Season 2 of The Empress puts Elisabeth and Franz under heavy pressure. According to Collider, Elisabeth faces pressure to give the empire an heir. On the other hand, Franz struggles to figure out where his responsibilities as emperor end and his family come in. Just then Austria goes to war, and Franz heads to the battlefield himself. However, witnessing the deaths and destruction leaves him traumatized.

Things aren't exactly peaceful within the royal family either. Franz and his brother Maximilian continue to clash over how the empire should deal with its people. Their differences eventually lead Franz to remove Maximilian from his position. Viewers also see Franz struggling as he deals with one devastating loss after another, including the death of his daughter.

By the end, Maximilian walks away with Charlotte. On the other hand, Franz is left carrying the weight of the war. Elsewhere, Ava's secret and pregnancy are also revealed, forcing her to leave the palace. But Alexander doesn't want to let her go and decides to find her.


What does the trailer of The Empress Season 3 reveal?

From the very beginning of the trailer for The Empress Season 3, viewers see political and emotional tension throughout the season. It starts with Elisabeth saying that she doesn't know if she can always be that, hinting at the Empress. The trailer also shows the war, with Franz's return as he is seen standing on the battlefield and seeing the devastating results they leave. Clearly, we can see the growing coldness between the two and Elisabeth's increasing isolation at court as Franz feels shaken while carrying the weight of the lives lost in the war.

The trailer also hints at Elisabeth struggling with her marriage even after multiple efforts, her health, and the pressure of life at the Viennese court, especially after the trailer depicts marital strain. All of this together will push Elisabeth to leave Vienna and seek a fresh start on a distant island.

As The Empress Season 3 trailer continues, we also meet Hungarian revolution leader Count Andrássy, who seems to bring a new complication into Elisabeth's life. The two develop a strong connection, and she says that with him she feels free. Whether this relationship could shape a new future for her and the empire is something viewers will have to wait and see.

The Empress Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on November 12 on Netflix.
