After a long break from East Highland High, Euphoria is finally gearing up for it's third and final season and before we dig in, a recap of all the events that happened in Season 2 is absolutely necessary. The sophomore season ended in a lot of emotional wreckage with shattered friendships, exposed families, and one devastating police shootout that changed everything.
With a confirmed time jump ahead, here's a recao of where we left our favorite characters before the finale seals the deal.
What happened in Euphoria Season 2?

Season 2 opened on a positive note as Rue claimed sobriety. But behind the lies, she was using heavily again, even as her relationship with Jules briefly rekindled. When she gets to know the truth from Elliot, she tells Rue's mother.
The intervention scene remains one of the show’s most harrowing sequences as Rue screamed, blamed everyone in sight, and tore through her house in withdrawal fueled rage. A main character here was a suitcase full of drugs she owed to a dealer named Laurie, but her mother flushed thousands of dollars worth of product and now she owed money she did not have. What followed was a desperate spiral across town, including a terrifying encounter with Laurie that hinted at deeper danger still unresolved. In the trailer for Euphoria season 3 we have seen a glimpse of this, which means Laurie will prove to be rather troublesome for Rue.
By the finale, Rue began detoxing with her family’s support. In a voiceover, she claimed she stayed sober through the end of the school year. Whether that sobriety lasts into Season 3 remains the looming question.
Cassie, Nate, and a disastruous relationship

On New Year’s Eve, Cassie made the decision that defined her arc that season. She slept with Nate, her best friend Maddy’s ex and from there, secrecy turned into obsession as Cassie convinced herself that Nate represented love, validation, and security. Nate molded her into something closer to Maddy, altering her appearance and reinforcing the toxic dynamic.
When Rue publicly exposed the relationship, Maddy’s fury was volcanic. It gave birth to one of the most iconic scenes from the show as Maddy confronts her. However, by the time of the finale, Nate broke up with Cassie in the wake of Lexi’s play as Cassie stormed the stage, humiliating herself and Lexi in front of the entire school before being confronted by Maddy. Cassie admits that her and Nate have already parted ways and if not mended, the friendship stops being explosive.
In Euphoria season 3, we have already seen that Cassie and nate are now engaged and she works as an adult content creator. It would certainle be exciting to see what turn the relationship takes.
Lexi's play was the highlight of the season

Lexi Howard stepped out of the background and into the spotlight with her autobiographical play, Our Life. What she framed as art felt like public therapy for everyone involved. The production recreated deeply personal moments from her friends’ lives, from Rue’s addiction to Cassie’s romantic disasters.
The play forced characters to confront versions of themselves they did not recognize. Nate, enraged by a satirical locker room sequence that implied suppressed sexuality, stormed out. Cassie exploded mid performance, Maddy’s anger resurfaced but for Rue, the play did something positive.
For Rue, the play served as revelation as seeing her trauma staged allowed her to view herself with empathy rather than self loathing. In a quiet post show exchange, Rue thanked Lexi and that gratitude anchored the finale in something almost hopeful. Lexi and Rue's friendship is another thing fans are excited to explore in Euphoria Season 3.
Fez, Ashtray, And The Inevitable Tragedy
While the school staged drama, real violence brewed elsewhere. Fezco almost goes to Lexi's play but tragedy strikes.
Mouse's death brings the police to Fezco's house, led by Custer who's wearing a wire. Ashtray then kills Custer and the aftermath is chaos as Fez begs Ash to let him take the blame. Ash locks himself in the bathroom with weapons and the police raid that follows ends in gunfire. Ash is killed and Fez is shot and arrested.
Angus Cloud, who portrayed Fezco on the show passed away in 2023. It's a devastating loss for fans of the show and the cast, and fans are waiting for how the show will play out his passing.
Jules And Rue's romantic arc

Rue and Jules ended the season with quiet resignation as Jules apologized and she expresses her love but Rue kisses her forehead and walks away. She chooses recovery over romance and acknowledges that loving Jules had not been enough to keep her sober. Sometimes survival requires distance.
Their separation marked growth, but also loss. With five years passing before Season 3, their future dynamic is uncertain. Former lovers, or maybe strangers. Something in between.
Kat, Maddy, And The Side Stories

Not every arc landed smoothly that season. Kat’s storyline shrank dramatically, culminating in a breakup with Ethan built on a fabricated illness. The shift frustrated many viewers, leaving her development feeling incomplete. Hopefully the third season gives her arc justice and she finds a satisfying end to her storyline.
Maddy, meanwhile, began confronting her own patterns. After enduring Nate’s manipulation and violence, she seemed to choose self preservation. Her confrontation with Cassie suggested emotional maturity, though not full healing. It has been suggested that her character will play a stripper in the third season, and we see her in contact with Rue, which means the characters are still connected.
With a five year time jump and enough time for the characters to have reached adulthood, Euphoria season 3 will hopefully give all the characters the endings they deserve.
Euphoria Season 3 will release on April 12, 2026, on HBO Max.
