In The Forsytes Episode 2, James pushes Soames to become the head of the family stockbrokers' firm. Even though by the rules, Jo is set to be the next head, James believes his son, Soames, is a perfect fit for the role. Jo also seems to have frequent disagreements with the firm members. For instance, when James brings up the diamond mining investment opportunity in India, Jo brings up the poor working conditions and tells that the investment will be a risk. Jo is not ruthless; he has empathy, unlike others in the business.

Jo visits Louisa

Jo met Louisa ten years ago when they were in Venice. They started dating; however, their relationship ended when Jo was called back to London. Louisa knew that they could never be together since she was a lady's maid. However, she promised to write to him after a year and ask whether he was still in love with her. However, that never happened. The person who knew about their relationship is Jo's friend Issac Cole, a lawyer. They have been friends since their Oxford years. It is Issac who assures Jolyon Sr. that Jo would be a perfect leader.

Jo visits Louisa's shop at night, and after a brief chat, she sends him away.

Soames and Irene's growing bond

Irene doesn't want to give up her ballet dreams yet. She wants to move to Paris. However, after her father's sudden death, their finances were crumbling. She was looking for work to gather the funds for her future studies. Soames was clearly smitten by Irene, and he took her on a picnic. Irene decides to sell her jewelry after she got an audition call from Paris. She is about to leave in a month. This leaves Soames stunned. He doesn't want to lose her, but Irene knows his family won't accept her. Turns out, Soames is set to get engaged to Olivia Caterer, the daughter of a prominent family. During the opera, Frances tries to set June up with the Carterets' son. However, June manages to escape for a while and meets Phillip Bossiney, who hands her a pamphlet on Fabianism.

Louisa's secret

Frances meets Louisa and reveals that she knows about Louisa and Jo's past romantic entanglement. She also tells Louisa that she is aware that her children are actually Jo's. She threatens Louisa that no one should know about her secret because that would tarnish her image and that of Jo's as well. Frances then tells the truth to Jolyon.

Jo once again pays a visit to Louisa. Louisa asks him to leave, but Jo notices her children's resemblance to him. He realizes that Louisa never married and the twins were his. When he confronts Louisa about the same, she tells him that she was about to write a letter to him, but she found out about his marriage from a newspaper. Jo cries his heart out and introduces himself to the children before leaving. However, James sees Jo leaving Louisa's shop. Jo tells the truth to Frances, and June overhears the secret. This leaves her heartbroken. Elsewhere, Soames buys a fancy pair of ballet shoes for Irene and confesses his love for her.
