The Gilded Age Season 4 premiere, titled Ring the Bells, aired on HBO on November 1. The platform's historical drama series has returned with another season and the premiere set the stage for many exciting storylines.

According to People Magazine, The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1 featured Oscar and Enid's marriage of convenience, while Gladys battled a difficult childbirth. Oscar and Enid had ambitious plans for their future and decided to open European-style artist salons to strengthen their position in society. Elsewhere, Agnes learned her daughter-in-law's shocking secret, which led to a tense confrontation.

Here's the complete recap.

Gladys gives birth in The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1

The central plot of The Gilded Age Season 4 premiere focused on Gladys giving birth. The doctor soon delivered harrowing news to Gladys' husband, Hector (the Duke of Buckingham), his sister Sarah and Gladys' mother Bertha that Gladys' delivery had taken a dangerous turn, as the baby was breech. When the doctor asked who should be saved (the mother or the child) if it came to that, Sarah was quick to suggest they save the baby, as he was their future. But Hector asked the doctor to save both and, if the worst came to be, save his wife, much to Sarah's disappointment.

It didn't come to a life-altering choice in The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1, as the doctor saved both Gladys and her baby boy. But the doctor noticed that Gladys was bleeding internally and had to remove her uterus to stop the hemorrhage, meaning she wouldn't be able to have more children. As the doctor relayed this information to Gladys' family, Bertha had the difficult task of delivering this tragic news to her daughter. As the episode concluded, Bertha revealed to Gladys that Hector chose her, but the other news remained a secret from the new mother.

Enid and Oscar got married in The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1

The Van Rhijn household was gearing up for Oscar and Enid's wedding and the arrival of President Cleveland. While Ada was naturally funding the visit, she pulled out at the last minute after Peggy revealed Cleveland's politics. Ada's last-minute decision did not sit well with Agnes, and the situation escalated when Armstrong casually revealed that her new daughter-in-law used to be Mrs. Russell’s maid. Agnes confronted Enid about her former occupation. The new bride did not deny it and revealed that Oscar was aware before the marriage. The matter was put to bed for now when Enid offered money to fund the President's visit to the Van Rhijn household.

The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1 featured Marian and Larry's reunion at Oscar and Enid's secret wedding reception downtown. The ex-couple found themselves together at a hotel when their carriage broke down in the middle of a thunderstorm. When Larry knocked on Marian's door, their kiss led to a passionate night, which Marian was ashamed of when she woke up the next morning.

George plans to find his shooter in The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1

George was having a hard time in The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1. Gladys' father was not only recovering from the assassination attempt in the previous season but was also at odds with his biggest client, John D. Rockefeller. But catching his shooter remained George's top priority.

In the final moments of the premiere, it was revealed that George had hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to catch the man who attempted to murder him in the previous season. It looks like the agency is nearing catching the man, as they identified someone living downtown with a woman. While George seemed to know the man, his identity remained hidden as the episode concluded.
