Isabel Allende's debut novel, The House of the Spirits, is getting a television adaptation.

Originally written in Spanish and published in 1982, the book has been a worldwide hit after its release. The storyline of the novel revolves around four generations of the Trueba family while focusing on love, political changes, and even family conflicts. It also includes magical elements.

Thanks to its lasting popularity, Amazon is now bringing the famous novel to life in the form of a television series. The news was first announced at the 76th Berlinale Film Festival and was later confirmed via an article published on Amazon News.

Good news for the fans of The House of the Spirits, as the series already has a confirmed release date, and thankfully, it's not very far away. The series is releasing on April 29 and will be available to stream on Amazon Prime through a subscription.

International viewers who don't have a subscription can also choose a thirty-day free trial to watch the series or can go for the $14.99 monthly plan to watch it.


How many episodes are there in The House of the Spirits?

The series reportedly consists of eight episodes. However, the official runtime of the episodes is not revealed yet. Additionally, it's not confirmed whether the series will follow a weekly release schedule or will release all its episodes in one go.

The story of the series will focus on three women named Clara, Alba, and Blanca from different generations and their stories surrounding love, family tensions, and political shifts.

Speaking of the series, Javiera Balmaceda, the head of content for Amazon Prime Video Latin America, Canada, and Australia, said in a statement reported by Variety:

"This is our most ambitious Latin American original to date and it embodies our unwavering investment in elevating storytelling on the global stage"

Where is The House of the Spirits shot?

The upcoming Amazon Prime series was reportedly shot in Chile for the most part, as reported by Variety. The novel is written by Isabel Allende, who is from Chile, with the story of the novel also set in Chile, following the lives of three women from different generations.

Speaking of the shooting location, Francisca Alegría, one of the showrunners of the series, said:

"It wasn’t the obvious choice at first, but Fernanda and I insisted and luckily Amazon and FilmNation agreed. Being able to shoot such an iconic Chilean novel in Chile was incredibly important for us — and for Andrés [Wood] as well."

After the episode count was revised, Andrés Wood joined Fernanda Urrejola and Francisca Alegría as the third showrunner to help guide the project through the change. He said it was a new and more team-based experience for him, and that he gained a lot from it. Wood further added:

"It was also creatively special because the entire leadership team was made up of women — Fernanda and Francisca as well as the producers at FilmNation and the executives at Amazon. I was, in a sense, the only male voice in the room."
