The role of Chinese state agents and Mexican cartels

The Season 2 premiere focused on the story of a Mexican cartel and Chinese state agents. The Mexican cartel owned police departments, influenced border patrols, and silenced local governments.

Meanwhile, the Chinese state agents secretly supported the cartel logistics, not for drug shipments but to move assets and hide high-value people among human cargo. The VIPs included engineers, scientists, and experts having knowledge about shifting the balance of power.

The episode Beware the Old Soldier also highlighted how China relied on cartel routes to channelize smuggling and enforcing fear to secure a hidden passage stretching from South America to the Middle East. But China overlooked a global operation hiding in plain sight, one that was already tightening its grip. To fight back, the CIA turned to someone unexpected, Josie Carrillo.

Josie's connection with Alvaro revealed

In Lioness Season 2, Josie is portrayed as an army helicopter pilot known for grit and precision. However, she had a dangerous connection with the cartel leader Alvaro Carrillo. In episode 2, the show revealed that Josie is the niece of Alvaro, and their family link became the decisive key to the mission.

In Lioness Season 2 episode 3, the agency planned to infiltrate the cartel's inner circle by using Carillo's family connection. Their focus was not on Alvaro but on her father Pablo. He was suspected of managing the cartel's legal business, money laundering, hiding shipments, and maintaining the appearance of respectability.

Josie steps into Operation Skyhawk

The twist came in episode 8 when Josie stepped into Operation Skyhawk - a dangerous helicopter strike aimed at capturing a high-value target tied to the cartel's Chinese partners.

Josie took control of the helicopter and flew it with her door gunner Cruz Manuelos. Both of them carried out a sudden strike that crushed the enemy convoy.

The mission turned when the helicopter was hit by return fire and forced down, leaving Josie with a broken leg. After that, Joe's QRF team moved in quickly and fought against repeated waves of enemy fighters.

Lioness Season 2 finale: Joe reunites with her family

In Costa Rica, Kaitlyn and Byron persuaded Pablo to cooperate with them. They offered him the chance to manage Alvaro’s business from the U.S. while enjoying protection in Mexico. Pablo then set up a meeting with Alvaro at his heavily guarded compound.

Kyle, Pablo, and Kaitlyn barely managed to get past the private contractors controlling security. Once inside the meeting room, Byron handed Pablo a pistol to kill his brother with a shot to the head.

The season concluded with Joe McNamara returning home to the U.S. She finds her husband, Neal, waiting for her outside. They both admit they were unsure if she would return or if there would still be a home to come back to. In the final moment, Joe and Neal hold each other tightly and then walk inside to reunite with their daughters.
